Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I knew the forecasters said it would rain in our area. The sky was all blue when i left, and I was able to get a solid 3 hours of fishing in before it rained.

My Shimano spinning reel has the same 8 lb test on it thats been there for a year. I left some on for backing, then filled it with some 6lb test. BIG MISTAKE.

Second cast, the line jumped off the spool and stopped at the first eye. I spent a good while trying to untangle then said forget it. I set the pole down.

Grabbed the Z03 and made a few casts with a spinner bait, but the casts werent as long as before. I checked it and found the old Alpha rod had a broken eyelet up top. the line was tangling in it. I took the shimano off the Wally Marshall rod and put the Z03 on it.

That Cajun Line that comes with the Zebco is not good, hate to say it. It popped a few times on cast and is too soft for freshwater fishing with stumps and underwater structure.

Not long after that, I pulled out the sacalait pole and put a live worm on it. Thank heavens I brought live worms because lures didnt work today. Caught some perch and a goggle eye, and believe it or not, a croaker.

I got snagged a dozen times, lost at least 4 worms, sinkers, hooks, and a jig.

Caught probably a handful of fish.

Not everyday will be productive every time out but there was a couple lessons learned that you may remember for now on. Every time we go fishing there is something we learn whether bad or good. The most important thing is have fun and GOOD FISHIN..

Timbaux, I used to fish with a spinning reel, It was always spooled with magnathin 6 lb. test line...

I put new line on and as always put too much on, several cast later the birdnest came out. I was catching crappie and the birdnest was horrible!!! That is when I picked up my flyrod which was rigged with a intermediate sinking line and the crappie were still bitting!!!! That was over 10 years ago and the spinning rod is out in the building with the bird nest intact!!!!!!

There are no bad days of fishing there are days the the bite is slow!!!!! If the bite is slow I am still perfecting my cast!!!! A bad day is when I have to go to work on what looks to be a good fishing day, HI HO HI HO, it is off to work I go!!!!!

Sounds like a great day Timbaux. Sure beats working, and like Dick says you learn something everyday. I cannot think of a time fishing when something didn't go wrong - I lose tackle, get bitten by bugs or maybe even end up in the water. I find the best thing to do is to is just slow down and be very deliberate.

If nothing else, brother, you learned that gadgets and big-money tech may fail -  so always keep some worms and that 'sacalait' pole with you.

I got those worms ...i keep them and the sacalait pole too. I use jigs for sacalait.

One point i didnt mention was the arrogant pro bass dude that showed up. He proceeded to cast where I was fishing. I was about to run him off. When the 6lb test jumped off my spool, he comes over and starts casting where I was. I am not a mean person but I have had to tell people several times, back off,, i am fishing here. I had worms out for goggle eyes and gill.

A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.  btw, I concur re: the Cajun line, I don't like it either.  Seems overly susceptible to abrasion, nicks, and scrapes.  Must me on some kinda blood thinner (like me, ha).
