Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

How do you guys do this? I can tell they aren't painted on freehand as I have done in the past. If you use some product that you purchase, please include specific details such as size, etc.

Thanks

Super nice jigs, Jim!

Randall, you can get Eyes to put on jigs just about any where they sell fly tying or lure components. I like to start out with a blank round head jig and tap each side with a hammer just enough to have a flat area to attach the eye.  Paint and dress the jig to your liking, adhere the eye and then clear coat the jig head.  Put the jig on a rotating spindle ( can be easily made with a barbecue rotisserie motor) to dry the clear coat evenly.

For crappies, I have the best luck with the metallic foil eyes.

I use the craft paint from wal mart;; a little hard as nails over coat

I spend more time on the jig heads than the tying themselves. First thing I do is get my needle nose pliers and flatten the jig head with the smooth part of my pliers. I then paint the jig heads with 2 or 3 coats of powder paint fist coat always white my first coat/base coat. The 2nd coat is my desired color and the 3rd coat a clear with glitter. Then I add my holographic 3D eyes. Then over the eyes 3 coats of Sally Hansen hard as nails of coarse a drying period between each coat. Then come the jig tying .

you have it down right to Dicky!!   your jigs look awesome buddy!!    guys- don't forget those little glass triva things in craft shops.  you can have red eys; green; blue, silver.  possibilities are really endless.  on a small note-- have thought of even shallow drill a few; just to see how it would look; with glass eys flush with body.  something to play with this long winter!!
