Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Fly Rod, Spinning gear, and spoons, a deadly combo

I'm finally starting to get into some decent gills, some fish worthy of this outstanding community of bluegill enthusiasts!

Hit some of my ol' favorites, and some new waters last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Not much for the story, fished, fished hard, tried several different tactics until I found out A) where the gills were, and B) what they wanted.  It varied from body of water, to body of water.  Fished from shore and the float tube.

Enjoy the pic parade

I has teeth, and I wants big food!

9" gills just don't look that big when your a giant, my buddy Wray fools several after switching to a sinking line

Crappie???? I wasn't lookin' for no stinkin' Crappie!  eh, you're not bad, smile for the camera!  Caught on a 1/64th oz jig head with any product that has the following terms in it..... 1"...... GULP.... Alive!

Fly rod not working, but the jig head is?  Let's see what a spoon will produce, Thank you Bill!

So close to another Master Angler fish, I coulda cried.

Great pics Alex!
What spoon are you using, and where can you purchase them?

thanks

John
I was using the last of my stash of bluefox rattlin' flash spoons, 1/16th oz, in firetiger. No longer made to my knowledge in that size. sometimes I see them on Ebay, usually when I'm broke.
Great pics! Love the boat too!
Thanks Alex, I Googled them and found some.

John
Nice pictures! Was your buddy trolling or casting in his tube? Why did the sinking line make a difference? Reason for all the questions/ I am love to "troll" in my kickboat and was thinking about buying a sinking or sinktip line.
Thanks,
Tom
Tom, he was casting. We were fishing in about 8-10 of water, and the gills were hanging out in the bottom 2' of water or so. With the fly he had on, he could have gotten his fly to where the fish were with a long enough leader/tippet combo, and a small split shot, but it would have taken forever.

With the sink tip fly line, it only takes a few seconds for the fly to get into the target zone.
Great stuff. Alex, you are really a huge bonus to this forum. Thanks for all your great contributions!
Alex,
Thanks for the reply! I can't wait to find a sink tip line. I don't have the patience to wait on a long leader/floating line.
Tom
Alex, I'm JEALOUS! :-D
