I too added lime to my pond and found it made a big difference. My only concern was the clarity of the water after I added the lime. Does the clarity of the water mean that I was killing the zooplankton?
now that a good question. Never thought about that.
That maybe the case.  From my understanding visibility should only be a few inches. And your water should have a blueish green tint.  And if visibility is more than that, you dont and wont have the plankton bloom that you need to really benifit your small fish and you will need to fertilized the pond. And fertilization produces up to 400 lbs more fish per acre.
what was your PH before the lime? it was my understanding that natural or rain water would be the correct PH already
it can be 1 to 3 tons per acre. Fish can survive in a ph range of 4-10 with the optimum being a seven. I have found that you can mount a lime spreader on the back of a large jon boat. I purchased one at a local farm store for about 200 dollars which was designed to fit on an atv which will hold over 50 lbs. it takes awhile but you can get the job done. You probably will only need to lime it every 3-4 years
Ph in my pond is now 7-7.5 from what I can tell. Clarity is about 24 inches, minimal pond scum. Added eleven pvc trees to the pond, and ordered 30 yards of pea gravel for the shallow end of my pond. Hope it will be here by Wed. Have seen only four snakes, killed the one cotton mouth, the rest were just water snakes. After killing the cotton mouth haven't seen anymore of the other snakes. Have very few turtles, and got rid of the big ones. Lot of work owning a pond but so worth it when you see the grandkids having fun.
I hear you on the work. I too check PH 6.5 to 7 right now. I can see about 18" but that me and my old butt too. I added eight small bundle of pvc for the little ones to hide in. Seems I shooting one big turtle after another. 80 degrees yeaterday and gills stating to congegate near the shallow end. I took the feed up a little. 9:00am & 1:00Pm and then again at 6:00PM. a 1/2 pound coffee can per feeding. If they keep eatting like pigs might up that a little.
I added about 1/4 the amount of lime to my pond as is suggested so as not to "shock" the fish. Does anyone know how long it takes pelleted lime to dissolve?
I have now added 1 ton of lime to my 1/3 acre 6.8 PH pond. It's been 5 days. The PH is rising, but the clay is still suspended. Did an experiment in a jar with pond water and lime. It really does sink the clay. Also, the PH never went over 7.5 in the jar. I have heard that it won't dissolve if the water doesn't need it. That's good, wouldn't want to trade one problem for another. Hope it sinks the clay in my pond soon.
My pond is mud colored from the clay we dug up. I suspect that it is more alkaline from the clay than it would normally be since it is rain and creek water. I have added 1050 lbs of lime so far, and it is still 6.8PH although it improved to 7.5 for a few days. Few plants grow in it. The clarity is a cataract vision 3" now.  That's at the edges where we could toss in the lime. The one place where it is totally clear is in a cement pot with lime concentrated in it that we run the aerated water pipe into, and it washes out into the rest of the pond. So far, the rest of the pond remains cloudy. Anyone know if it's possible to put too much lime in a pond? I would like to put about 2 tons or until the water clears a little more.
How long has the water been mud colored?
All winter because we were widening the pond
