Marvin, which Thill floats, clip on or slip floats?

At 5:27pm on March 23, 2020, Marvin Morgan said…

Am looking for info about how to rig the different types of Thill floats, but unable to find any books/pamphlets that show the way to rig the different type of floats.  Can you point me in the right direction to find out about the different floats, and how to rig them?

Hi Johnny;

Read your Gulp vs Waxie test thread and am really intrigue. Although I use live bait nearly 95% of the time I've never tried waxies, meal worms, corn or anything else other than worms, crawlers, leeches and minnows(the later is my least used). Over the years have heard of lots of people using waxies ice fishing but rarely hear about using them in open water.

I am definitely old school, still use 40+ year old Mitchell reels and 8-9 foot fiberglass rods and recently have graduated from the re/white round bobbers to the pencil type floats. Hate the slip type floats and the spring type can wreck havoc on light line. Sure would like to know more of the things you mentioned on another thread about older fishing tools were better than todays.

Thanks, Kelly

Hey Johnny, I sent you a PM to this effect also, but what I'm really interested in testing are floats - I gave more detail on the kind of fishing I do in the PM.

I might also be interested in trying some of your groundbait - I tried it once several years ago and didn't have much luck, but at the time I was living in California, and I was fishing it from the bank on a large public reservoir.  I'd be interested to see how it performs in ponds where the bluegill are fed daily with a high-protein food, which I would think would make them more susceptible to groundbait.  Is there a way to fish it on the surface?  The ponds I fish with automatic feeders all are fed floating pellets.

Thanks for praying for me.  I had my operation in May and it looks like they got all the cancer out.  I will think of you and others who prayed for me whenever I go fishing in the future.  Thank you so much.

Hi Johnny -

The fish weren't there at my spot today .Of course I gave it all of 15 minutes. The wind was from the south again but air temp has been colder the past few days. I'm convinced they'll be back .Maybe they were there but not hitting and sluggish but I suspect they dropped back away from shore  where I was casting .

At any rate glad you're doing your show again even tho I am having trouble getting a working password to go with my email so I can post comments to the blogtalk radio site.

What size hook do you employ with spikes? Maybe the livelier heartier spikes you get are a bit bigger than what I've been able to obtain. The small shriveled spikes I have left over from ice fishing look pretty ridiculous on the #12 hook I believe I was using today .More hook than bait!  I caught Perch and Gills on a #10 hook with mealworms which I know you don't prefer .

good for you. what is in that pond? what do they want to get rid off? what do they want in there? probably koi, so they look pretty for the passer bys.

John ,what's the proper way to attach/use the top float in this photo? How does one utilize the thin rubber sections on these floats? I bought these two recently and used the bottom float with good success yesterday. The Betts float that's slightly smaller works perhaps better but I like the fact the thill pear shaped can eliminate a bead.Gotta try the small swivel trick you suggested too. Thanks,
John Sheehan

Thank you John! I will try to add great content on the show to make it interesting and will plug the site because I love BigBluegill.com.
Next show - this Saturday or anytime you feel like it.
I will cover the cold water cane pole rig and how fish feed.
Great news here - rains and warmer weather expected this week - ice could be knocked off the water by early next week.

2 mile walk at Braidwood huh... well, I will have to pack light. I need the exercise too. I would think that long walk will mean better fishing, fewer people fishing. Edge of the rocks where they meet the bottom should be magic- filled with fish. I am going to give it a try one of the first two days.

the cooling lakes have current and are "perched"and have a lot of wave action and very little structure.it is tough fishing.the east side of lasalle lake in the big rocks still has some good panfish.the only structure is the rocks and depth changes.bring a bike it is a 2 mile walk minimum
