Bryce, I know nothing of fly fishing. Would love to get into it eventually, but need to learn how to catch fish the conventional way first. Haha. However, at another website, PondBoss, I recalled a post and links from a member who is an avid fly fisherman and I searched and found one of the websites he suggested to get started. Good luck, I'll provide the link below.

try www.expertvillage.com and look up fly fishng and theres tons of videos ranging from how to fly fish to all the way to fly tying and the equipment needed to do both. ENJOY!

P.s. im glad that u have taken in the interest of fly fishing, once u become good yourself make sure u pass it on to the youngsters in your family,eh?
A very good fairly inexpensive rod is Temple Forks and Bass Pro makes their own branded fly reel that balances the rod great.
I actually learned on a 5wt Eagle Claw and I think it's an OK rod and a good weight to start learning with. The hardest thing for me to learn in flycasting was to not bend or break my wrist when casting. Finally the man teaching me tied my wrist to the rod to keep me from bending it.
get the scientific angler beginner out fits with the DVD. it is a good out fit for a cheap price. the panfish one comes with weight forward floating line. the weight forward is the tapper. it makes it a lot easier to cast. the DVD is very helpful i was able to cast good in an hour or so.

copy and paste this into your address bar and check it out
Books and videos are great, but I'd recommend you talk to the guy/girl in your local fly shop (there's bound to be one SOMEwhere in Omaha). They can usually point you to the nearest fly fishing club, where you can get lessons (hint: join the club and the lessons are either 1) free, or 2) greatly discounted).

Just "googled" it: Omaha, Cornhusker Fly Fishers
meetings: 3rd Wednesday, 6:30 PM, Aksarben Aquarium, south of Gretna

Good luck with it, and have fun! (and, yes, pass it along)
looks like you have recieved some good advise so far but if you need a further tutorial'feel free to sign up for " Lord of the Fly Rods , College of Fishing Knowledge" It's free for all members of Bluegill, Big Bluegill.
I learned to fly fish with a newspaper under my casting arm. Holding the paper between the inside of the upper arm and the body helps perfect form.
