Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I`m really enjoying my newbie fly fishing trips to local ponds and lakes. Right now I am using a 3wt combo and a 4wt combo. With a 6# leader mono leader. What are your thoughts to switching to a 6# or 4# fluorocarbon leader? From my understanding fluoro is denser than water so it tends to sink rather than mono which is semi buoyant until it gets water logged. Also from reading I gather it`s quite less visible than mono.

I don`t know if it`s just me or not, but I rarely get a surface strike. Most of my pecks then strikes occur as it`s in a slow sink or just after a pop and sink. How big of a difference is the sinking rate vs mono leader?

sounds like your having fun!... i tried floro and mono as leaders as well as braid... i settled on braid because it floats on top nicely and not dragging down my poppers or spiders. i used the fly rod really only for floating bugs so i quit use of the floro and mono... should work great on some sinking wet flys and nymphs though.

I carry and use both mono and fluoro for tippet material.  I typically use mono for foam bugs, and fluoro when I know I'm using a nymph.

That said, I typically go with a hopper-dropper or popper-dropper presentation, and that dictates a mono tippet.

Personally, I don't think it's worth the money. It didn't up my success rate, it's too expensive, and doesn't degrade. JMO
