Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Looking for a good panfish rod. Would like in 7 foot range. Want to throw small jigs and spoons 1/32 oz or so, from bank or boat. What would be better, ultralight or light action? I hear good things about St Croix Panfish rods?

Thanks

Love St. Croix rods but don't own a 7' model. Berkeley 'dough series' may be worth looking into for your wants .I have one and have fished it with floats for a few years .

by far i prefer a U.L . rod;; for blue gills!!  its more fun!  like John Sheehan says  a st.croix is hard to beat-- but be sure to get a good reel to!  president reels are super good!  quantum 10 reels are to!!  then a good line - of your preference!!

I have several St. Croix ultra light pan fish rods and in my opinion you can't by a better fishing rod. The drawback is they are very expensive especially if you get into the Legend Elite Series. $330 currently for the 6' Ultralight...... that being said... I broke one a few years back and mailed it to St. Croix in Wisconsin with a note. Got a brand new rod within two weeks. That kind of customer service is hard to beat. The rods are made in the USA which is a plus... but I believe the Panfish series are currently being manufactured in Mexico. Mr. Hendrix makes a good point regarding the reel... I fish the Smallest version of the Shimano Sustain... which runs around $300 with that kind of price tag... you're looking at  $600.00 for Rod & Reel... That's an awful lot of money for a Bluegill outfit. Having said that... I recently purchased a Pflueger  President which only cost $50.00 from Cabelas and I've been very impressed with it. Great Reel.

Ok thanks. I'm ok with the Panfish series being made in Mexico, due to St Croix quality. I want something with a little backbone to throw small jigs and spoons from the bank. Might go with a light instead of ultralight.

David Eitius;( tooty) loves the wonder rods !!  fiberglass !!   tooty just gave me one not long ago-- dying to try it out!!

How long are they Carl? Need a 7 footer. Do they have light and ultralight action?

hi Frank!  the rod tooty gave me is a 6ft.6 inch-- whimpy as a willow switch!   tooty - makes rods at his house knows what he;s doing!  great looking rod!  pix of it on my page  if  you want to see!

Just looked at it Carl. Nice! Can u throw 1\32 Oz jigs pretty far with it?

Just ordered a 7' Light Shimano Clarus for the exact same purpose. They also make the 7' version in both an UL and a ML. I've read quite a few good comments about them, and their price point is at or under $100 depending upon where you look. Really looking forward to trying it out this spring. As for action, I've always leaned toward ML, but wanted to drop down slightly this time. Never have been a big fan of ultralights myself. If I go that light, I'd rather just pull out the fly rod instead.

I will check those out. Thanks.I have a 2wt fly rod I made myself Mr Waldman and sometimes don't have enough casting room, that's why I wanted this rod.

i just recently purchased a  SMC702ULFS 7'0" Ultra Light Fast 1/32-1/4 2pcs Diawa Spinmatic spinning rod after owning an 8-0 spinning rod for a complete year and highly recommend to anyone. The 8-0 footer ive dedicated to slip float fishing and I love it. The 7-0 model I matched with a Shimano Sienna 1000 series reel with 6# Nanofil and will be used for pitching tiny jigs for crappies mostly. It casts a country mile. The rod retails for just under 30.00

I also own an Okuma Celilo 7-0 L 2pc that I basically use for smallmouth pitching small swimming jigs the setup feels better matched with a larger 2000 series reel and I currently have a Sienna 2000 series rear drag mounted on that.

Good fishing and tight lines!
