Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The Gauntlet has been thrown down and the Challenge has been accepted,We will finally settle the age old question of what catches more fish   , flies or live bait on a fly rod. This question will finally be answered at the Kentucky Lake Rendezvous 2015 , True Purist of the fly rod that have never used live bait on a fly rod , and the meat hunters that have been using live bait on a fly rod  Old School style . This should be interesting , anyone care to  make a prediction on the outcome ?   LOFR

SEE THERE YA GO STIRRING UP THE POT ON HERE JUST WHEN EVERYTHING WAS QUIET ON HERE !!!!!!! GOOD job lofr on a personal way of fishing . I really think it depends on water clarity and so forth . I just prefer no waxy mess in my boats ... Well I don't have a boat anymore so guess that idea is out the window too.........

hey ... what happened to that boat of yours?

i was fishing a lake that was pretty new to me and i recognized a bluegill fisherman from my home lake that ive talked to many times. i pulled up near his boat and we started talking... he was fishing there for an hour or so and already had two 10" plus gills. he proceeded to tell me how he fished for them and i could clearly see he was casting rocket bobbers and he told me he was using crickets for bait. told me where his cheapest cricket source was... a pet store in midland. i asked him how he liked the rocket bobbers and he threw me one. ive used them alot since. went out and bought a cricket cage and then went to the pet store to buy some crickets... .21 cents a piece!! So that being said ive never even tried a cricket as bait.

through most of the month of august i f i didn't have nightcrawlers on board i may have been skunked a few days. nightcrawler chunks or bits saved my butt quite a few days.

yeah in most ways it was apples to oranges... the method still intrigues me... id like to see some youtube video of you and Carl casting that rig. is there a slip float setup that you can use on quills or is it just limited to fixed float? what is your most effective depth range?

and why havnt you posted a full instructable on

PATTERN-RIGGING-PRESENTATION for Bluegill

LOL

holy crap is this what happens when you near you upper 50s  ...you start telling all your fish stories... you guys are in trouble haha

SS  I would love to make a video of using the fly  rod  and porcupine quill with a cricket,  especially in close quarters just so yall could understand what we are talking about. As for effective  depth range , you can use it deeper than 7 ft by running the quill  up on the fly line off the leader, but I hardly use it deeper than 7 ft  If you have the line deeper than than the distance from the quill to the bottom  the quill will never stand up , at this time you can slide the quill  down on the leader and suspend the bait just above the bottom, or you can put it any where in the water column you think the fish might be. it only take 1/10th of a second to adjust the quill on the line. In close quarters you are not flinging your presentation more than 30 ft, sometimes it is just swinging your bait into your target area. As for crickets they cost us 3 cents apiece down here. So if I can get my hands on a GoPro , the video wont be far behind.  LOFR

hey ive had days when i have out fished people with flies.if they are biting on the surface only which they do at times nothing else will work.where i go every spring for crappies mainly you can catch one on every cast with a jig.99% of them are dinks.90% of the big ones are caught on minnows.same lake same weekend for over 10 years.sometimes we catch the spawn and they are shallow and deep in the brush.no way in hell your getting casting a jig.they are spooky so your not gonna get on top of them.not in 3 feet of water or less a minnow small float and no weight.they will chase the minnow right out of the water.we get some monsters every year.some years like last year we were way ahead of the spawn.water was cold after the record cold winter.first time they had enough ice to walk on in 30 years.could not catch a fish on a jig.nobody could and there are some great crappie fisherman on this lake.it was minnows or nothing.they barely even moved the float.it was a tough trip .we still caught fish but not the 100+ a day we are used to.

Just for the record i have my money on LOFR and Carl

The only time I have outfished bait on my flyrod is when I was catching one on every cast with either and didn't ever have to stop to rebait the fly.

hahaha  thanks for the vote of confidence slip stinker;; but im there to have FUN!! not into a fishing tournament! if i catch a few-- im happy!  been wanting to meet tooty;; as well as everbody else on bbg site! Jim Cosgrove-- buddy i sure wish you can come to! would love to meet ya!!  yes sir;; LORD OF THE FLY RODS and me;; fish quite a bit alike with fly rods and quills!! I think I impressed Johnny Wilkins and Keith Ritter-- on just how far i can cast a quill float at the reelfoot rendevou!  but also understand-- casting a long distance like that with a fly rod; and quill float-- your hooking one is slower than at closer distance!  i much prefer  only close distance- maybe 20 to 30 feet!!  if possible at all-- we might be able to do a quick video-- of LOFR  using his electric knife;; filleting gills!   if any body-- or everybody who can come to the rendevou-- please do!  guarantee  you will have a great time!!
