Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

So im out on the lake with no internet service fly fishing for the first time last year and had to retie a leader… I used the nail knot with the help of the straw and the internet at home and I forgot how to tie the darn knot. I tried for about a half an hour and came up with something that was close but get this… EASIER TO TIE! AND NO NAILS OR STRAWS!!. It seems to have the relative same knot strength, but I can tie this knot in the dark. Try it out. I couldn’t find any reference on line close so I called it what I exclaimed at the dock. SCREW THE NAIL KNOT!

i have just found a reference to this knot (NAILLESS NAIL KNOT) i like my name better lol

THE THINNER LINE TO THE LEFT IS THE LEADER...

i have a rod which i think fits your description... it is my

  1. 4wt rod 8.5' Eagle Claw PowerLight im7 graphite
  2. 4wt level taper line
  3. Remington 4/5/6 wt reel

this is my long distance rod somewhat heavier than my 3wt.. most fatigue at the end of the trip. the first two are spinning guides but would have to tape a reel on to the handle. with a nine ft leader i have attached a fixed float and dappled bait into weed pockets from the boat like a cane pole and caught some chunks.

That's the ticket.
I like em stout. 5/6 weight is good for me.
I use different leader/tippet combinations if I want a presentation with finesse.
I also don't want to keep up with a bunch of different lines and rods, etc. - fly fishing is only one style of fishing I use.
So I'm in the middle.

on looking closer Ken;; your right on this one!!  but David is right;; using those eyelets are a lot easier to tie onto;; never had a fish pull one out either!

carl... what do you use? i thought everyone used the nail knot?

i bought a pkg of 3 and lost the other two... so dang small lol

just remember to have this in your toolbox of knots to know... because one day your going to be out in the middle of nowhere and no eyelets.it could happen.

That's why I remember the loop connection.
MUCH easier and I can change it out later.

I don't like the loop AS MUCH as others, but it works.

Back in August, to satisfy my curiosity, I took a 6# flyrod ( don't remember brand ,from a K-Mart fly kit ) and put a Quantum micro spin reel on it with 4# test XL.......There WILL be a 3#  fly/spin rod built this winter and teamed with 2# test.

Luv it !   The fly line guides don't cast too bad for the very light things I was pitching.   Of course the reel is in a kinda awkward position...lol.

steve i did the same thing with my 3wt just a few weeks ago and had a blast with it fixed floating... although i taped the reel up forward to achieve better balance

i only used mine with a fixed float... did you cast any jigs at all? how sensitive was it?

walt foreman makes a good rod if your looking for one!!!  ask TONY!!!

slip stinker ;; in the past we use to call that  knot your showing-- a surgeons knot.   the more you work with different knots  the easier it gets..  remember practice makes perfect.
