Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

So im out on the lake with no internet service fly fishing for the first time last year and had to retie a leader… I used the nail knot with the help of the straw and the internet at home and I forgot how to tie the darn knot. I tried for about a half an hour and came up with something that was close but get this… EASIER TO TIE! AND NO NAILS OR STRAWS!!. It seems to have the relative same knot strength, but I can tie this knot in the dark. Try it out. I couldn’t find any reference on line close so I called it what I exclaimed at the dock. SCREW THE NAIL KNOT!

i have just found a reference to this knot (NAILLESS NAIL KNOT) i like my name better lol

THE THINNER LINE TO THE LEFT IS THE LEADER...

It strikes me as a good knot to know, in a pinch
It has served for along time, after all.

The thing about the nail knot is it was slow to tie... it always seemed like you didn't have enough fingers to finish the knot and then at the end of the tie the line would slip out of the knot and you would have to start over. This knot is fast to tie.

It's main negative is it is fiddly. Your right.
But it is tidy, in-line, and ties the lines together without a hinge point.

Me, I don't use it either

The main reason i like it i use similar knots for attaching flourocarbon leaders to main lines ( i hardly do this anymore) and my bobber stops... the more you tie the better you get. I liked those little clips or eyelets but i went through three of them in a day. Its part of hardware dependency i like to try to eliminate.

Two main choices then:
Nail Knot
Loop connection

There are bound to be others, but I wouldnt pretend to know them

But i dont fly fish like you guys do... you guys are true craftsman in the sport i can see that... you guys talk fly fishing and im going "what? "  when it comes down to it i really like the feel of a fish on a flyrod more than anything else.

I didn't fly fish before August 2012.
I'm leery of the term "craftsman" - but thank you for including me among some real masters as we have here.
If my advice matters, I'd see you leave fly casting as secondary. You are soooo good at your perfected methods, and very near your trophy goal. I would hate to see you distracted from that.
You can always fly cast a bit; the tackle is easy enough to bring along.

...and i missed the thank you for that David. thanks

:)

Why not pick up a spinning rod built on a fly rod blank? Best of both worlds?

Tony ... i missed the fight on my fly rod so much i did tape a ul reel to the handle to toss a few floats it worked out great and i like the flyrod action for floats... jigs not so much. however i have this particular rod made fro Daiwa that i bought for fixed floating for streams and rivers. feels exectly like a fly rod. i double duty this rod now for floating for gills and love it. your right..light flyrod action rods and gill go together

Daiwa Spinmatic Ultralight Spinning Rods - Model: SMC702ULFS (7' 0", UL, 2 pc.) @ $34.95

interesting review on this one:
“I cut the cork butt off an 8 footer and put a Okuma Fly Reel with Drag on it with Cortland Rocket Taper Floating line. Great balance, great action, great feel. I use a barrel roll flip to put the line and bait where I want it. Best $35 I ever spent and I catch tons of trout with it. Why spend mega bucks”

The action does remind me of a fly rod.

You can also get several makes of spin-fly rods, which are just what they sound like: a fly rod blank with spinning guides and a combo reel seat.
I recommend them; I use one every time Im out.
Mine are 7' in length from various makers. The Eagle Claw/Wright-McGill versions are probably best known among the type.
