Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I guess this would be a question aimed towards Bill Musky Modica but will gladly like to hear all opinions. I know Spoon Chucking vertically from a boat is an awesome way to catch big gills. But I fish from the bank and was wondering how effective horizontal chucking would be? I have access to some deep strip mine ponds, like 60 ft deep in spots.Im searching out for my first 10"+ Bluegill and was wanting some ddifferent options. What would be the best method to use to fish these deep waters from the bank in search of big gills?
Thanks

The methodology of "spoon chucking" is entirely based on horizontal presentations.......whether you're in a boat in deep water using a 1/4 oz spoon, or on the bank casting a 1/16 oz version......location will rely on surface temps, and seasonal patterns. During the first month after ice-out, we have done very well fishing in 1.5 to 5 ft of water using 1/16- 1/10 oz spoons tipped with plastics.....this pattern maintains as the season progresses into the spawn. Post spawn fish relate to the deeper weed edge and suspend in areas that require heavier spoons such as the 1/8 or 1/5 oz spoons........many late summer fish will take refuge in deep basin areas (30-40 ft) where 1/4-3/8 oz spoons are necessary to reach them.

Spoon chucking requires specialized equipment......i.e. long rods.....light braided line.....Fluorocarbon leaders, and a selection of single hook spoons in various weights to match current conditions.

Last weekends catch came from 3-4 feet of water using 1/16 to 1/10 oz spoons.....in 53 degree water.

Wow! That's quite the haul. Thanks Bill, appreciate the help. I will keep all this info in mind.
