Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here's something only my fevered mind would dream up.
Every angler wants to catch the big name fish. Big bass, Massive salmon, trophy bluegill, arapaima in South America (my personal quest), and so on.

But what about those other fish, the "trashy" ones we don't admire nor talk much about? If you were to target them, which ones would you go after?

In other words, what would a "Non-game Fish Bucket List" look like?

I hooked up with one bigger, once..........

Fishing for cats, got a nice hit, set the hook, it took up to my left, went about 75', turned towards the bank and started closing the distance between me and it.  It hit the cut bank about 50' to my left, then turned towards.  It came straight to me, about three in front of me, in 5 FOW.  As it came even with me, I started LIFTING as much as I could.  This green Leviathan, 6' long, slowly rose up, rolled one eye to look at me, turned towards deeper water, started swimming, and popped my line.

I don't know if I want to mess with one of those again....

Exactly. I bet you felt like Ahab a that point.

Here is the Bowfin I recently caught. This species will rock your world (and not to mention try to eat a few of your fingers)!!

Nice!

Yes nice is right!

i was a teenager the last time i caught one of those. awesome battles!

Have caught plenty of these but, never a alligator gar.......

That is a nice Gar

Pretty little guy. Beautiful markings.

Went Longnose Gar fishing last night and even though I didn't catch any I had a blast! They are a challenge to hook and are absolute MASTERS at stealing live bait.

carp on a fly, red horse suckers...they will usually take live worms and flys including small nymphs glo bugs and i have also caught one on a moss colored wolley worm, gar i have never caught one because of the hook set but you can catch them on fly with a streamer and let them swallow the hook or you can use live bait on like a spinning rod or casting rod. hoop this helps

I have never caught a bowfin and would like to.
