Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Search for a new jig pole... and spillway fishing report

Hey yall,

Three weeks ago, i went to the spillway west of NOLA, and the water was kind of low, and brown. Its brackish, so its not going to be rootbeer colored.

I did something I never done before in all my 47 years.. i left my tackle box HOME. !!!!!

I was stuck using my uncle's stuff, and he and i are different kind of fisherman. He is pretty much a split tailed plastic lure type guy. I use swim tails.. like Bobby Garland Strollr, and the like.

The day wasnt good for flyrods either. Both of us brought ours, and didnt get a single hit.

Last week, we returned, and I made sure that I brought my tackle box, but i left my wallet home. Early onset of Alzeheimers or something.  But the gills weren't biting. I caught one on a fly rod, and began fishing for sacalait and bass.

The 1/4 oz Cordell spot.. white with a little black spot on it, they work good, but after catching a bass on the third cast with it, the very next cast I lost it to the stumps, or possibly a crab trap.

I had already lost a 3/4 oz Rattle Trap (better lure than the Cordell lure) after catching two bass on it. So, i switched to a Bobby Garland blue and silver Strollr, which is an excellent swim bait for bass, bluegill and sacalait.

Caught one bass then it got rough out there. I switched over to the jig pole, and i was so upset with the wind blowing me all over. I have a railroad spike that i wanted to use for a second anchor but couldnt find it. I was getting blown back and forth, pendelum style. i had to keep letting line out and then taking it in..depending on where the boat stopped....

decided I am going to have to buy a jig pole with a small reel so i can manage the line and lure depth a little better.

As I have said before, a year ago or so, I have broken 3,, count them THREE of those Bucks and B&M crappie poles... they are not strong. crack really easy..

someone tell me where i can buy a good one?? I checking on Amazon.com.

yall let me know if yall got any idea where i can get a good one. we got hung up in the swamp a lot..so those cheap things they sell at the sports store dont cut it.

Cabelas makes a series of crappie poles that telescope...10, 12, 13 and a 16 ft model. I have a 13, and paid $11 for it. Seems to be heavier and more durable than the B&M 10 ft Little Jewel models, although a bit cumbersome, especially for an ultralight guy like me. I like pole fishing...getting back to my kid days. Maybe check them out and see if they work for you.

I went and talked to a guy that has been in the business and used to build rods.. he told me the BnM rods i was breaking were not the graphite rods. i got one now and havent been able to use it yet.. but its 11 feet long.. just looking at it and feeling the action of the tip..its a different and better rod. See what happens. if it breaks. i can get my money back.. but i really need a rod like this.
