Fly lines

In getting ready for next year I was wondering if anybody can give me some advice on different fly lines. When I say different I mean floating, Intermediate, and sinking. I'm still an old newbie to this stuff. I have my fly rods bought don't know when found it in the barn a 4wt and my new rod I bought this spring my 2wt and the one I just purchased a 6wt. I'm hoping I have all my bases covered. I have floating line for each so I guess my question is on the intermediate and sinking fly lines. Taking into consideration I'm still a newbie do we have any suggestions on the other lines at all. Do you think they will work for me or will it be to much of a hassle.

Great reply Mike and I don't personally know of anyone using sinking tip or any sinking at all. I have read some about it and most of the conversations I've read all pertained to Panfish and Bass and not trout or other species.

  I don't know for sure but would think it was for advanced fly rodders cause with a sinking line you are now trying to cast a heavier line than normal. Beginners in particular may find it very frustrating to say the least. I would also imagine this  for heavier weight rods and not your typical 4-6 weight panfish getter. 

  Just my own feeling here but the sinking lines seem like alot of work to accomplish and extra foot or two of depth of the offering and not worth the trouble or expense..........

David, the lake I fish is ultra clear and if the sun is out the fish go deep!!!!!! 10 to 20 feet is not unusual for the BLUEGILL and REDEAR to be located!!!!! Usually in the evening they come into the shallows to feed, and during the daytime they are in the deeper water out from those shallows!!!!!  I fish the sinking line 95% or more of the time!!!!  Trout are stocked here in November, I use the same line, in the same depth as I find the GILL!!! This time of the year I still fish for gill but it is hard to get past the trout!!!!!

Water temps are running in the lower 40'S right now!!!!!

I hear ya Greg Hopper and I normally just don't fish that deep . Yeah I know it is very productive to fish deeper , but I just like the action closer to the surface. More power to ya buddy and I would think there must be some disadvantages to the deeper fly line ? What weight rod you using if you don't mind ?

Thanks for the question you posted , Dick. I was over at Academy yesterday and they were having a sale on different fly lines. I was thinking about trying a sinking line, but after reading all the responses, and taking into consideration the types of water I fish, I am going to stay with my floating line.

I did decide to go with the intermediate sinking only because I love to finesse fish. I don't even know if its possible on a fly rod but I'm thinking it can be done with the intermediate because it has such a slow sinking rate. Sometime the fish do like small and slow maybe this will work at least I'll know.

I'm really sorry to hear that, Mike, and I hope your finger is OK.  75 degrees, wow! I hope you can make it back to that spot soon and catch whatever made that boil on the surface.

OUCH, I HOPE YOU DEBARB the HOOK!!!!!!!! I put a SEAL-BUGGER, heavily weighted in my ear once!!!!!! Luckily I debarb all my hooks prior to tying!!!!!!!!! It still hurts but comes out with ease!!!!!!!!

owwww,mike you got that one in deep.nice fly tho.panfish charlie?i tie a very similar type of fly.actually got one right thru the lip one day then my neice tripped over the line removing the hook for me and in the process pushed me in the water.good lokking spot and a good fly with the hook riding up

GREAT LOOKING SPOT you were trying to get back to Mike. That hook looked terrible in your finger like that and bet it did bleed some!!!!!!!

dick i have some sinking tip sections that loop to loop to my floating line.unless i am in a boat drifting ,it is the most miserable thing i can think of to cast.my soloution for deep clear water is a long 10 to 12 foot flourocarbon leader.usually 3 ' of 12 lb then a few of 8 then 6.then a short tippet of 6 or 4.i would much rather weight the fly than throw that awkward line.i feel i stay in contact with the fly better and a better hooksetthe leader and fly will take the floating  line slowly down with it. d.and allen do you make your own furled leaders?i have seen a couple videos on how to make them using flurocarbon.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate the input. I wanted to cover all the bases I was thinking deeper water finessing but you may be right on the leaders. Man I thought when I was getting started with this fly rod stuff this was all going to be simple but there is much more to it that I ever would have thought of. Again Thanks
