Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Hello Everyone,

I just registered today and I am looking for fall fishing tips for big bluegills in lakes in North Carolina.  I would appreciate information from all of the Obi Wan Kenobis of the Panfish world.

Thank Anakin Bluegill SkyFisher aka Robert...lol

I'm not sure that being the weekend makes any difference ...... doesn't Jeffrey go fishing every 2-3 hrs???  I'll bet the wheel bearings on his boat trailer never have the chance to cool off!....big grin

No, Tony, I think you meant to say he _stops_ fishing every 2-3 hours - the rest of the time you can be sure he's on the water ;-)

Being near Raleigh Robert, which lakes have you fished for gills?....Kerr...Gaston....?????

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me in to the group.  I fished Lake Wheeler from a row boat last weekend and followed the springtime pattern for fishing bluegills and caught fish in 3-5 foot of water,it was about 1:30PM in the afternoon. I caught catfish and bluegill, but they were not very big.  I was using my favorite panfish lures, 1-2" twister tails and also the crappie nibbles.  I tell everyone, crappie nibbles will catch bass, bluegills, crappies of course, catfish and more, but they do small bad..lol.  I was not able to locate the big bluegills because of time constraints.  I am not a bass fisherman but I always catch bass when fishing for gills.    I have not beat lake wheeler yet,but I will soon.  I look forward to hearing from Raleigh Robert, how do I get a hold of him?

I have fished Lake Johnson,Lake Wheeler and William B Umstead Park Lake. Since I do not like to fish from shore, unless I cast and walk around the entire lake. I fish wherever I can rent a boat.  I have not fished Lake Jordan because it is too expensive to rent a boat.  In my opinion William B Umstead is the best Lake for Bluegills, with the exception of Lake Jordan.  I have yet to fish it.

I love William B Umstead lake because it does not get the fishing pressure that a lot of the other lakes get,and it is smaller.  You are not allowed to put in boats.  You can only rent them, as a result the Bluegills grow to a large size.  I fished it 3 weeks ago and caught more Bluegills on my favorite lure to use for Panfish period, a 2" twister tail.  They bit that lure, one after the other consistently.  I also like to use Berkleys crappie nibbles.  I have caught crappies, bluegills and bass on this smelly bite,it's incredible.  Since I am originally from the north I will also use ice fishing lures to catch finicky gills.
