Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This fly was introduced to me by BBG'S Dave Kensinger. It is a fun tie and great little fly!!!! Flyfishers need this one in their arsonal!!!!!

Size 8 nymph or dryfly hook dressed with 2 biots tied in for a tail

Body material pearl braid. I used pearl flashabou til I got some of the braid. Tie in on top of the hook shank.

Wrap material 2/3's of the way up the shank!!!!

Dave uses chenille tied in at this point for the thorax. I use black rabbit dubbing and build up the thorax!!!

Tie in a saddle hackle

Wrap several turns to form a collar

Whip finish and the lighning bug is born!!! I also add lead wraps if i want to get it down quicker. I fish it on floating and sinking line both the redear love it in the evening!!!! This one is tied in black and pearl, but there are a lot of colors combos out there that would work really well!!!!

Thank You Dave Kensinger for this fly it is in my go to box, Fun to fish and tie!!!!

Excellant fly! I can see this tied in a variation of colors. Thanks for the instructions.
Jen, Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!!!!

Nice looking fly! But, can you tell a noob such as myself what a biot is?

Thanks!

Jonathan, a biot is the leading edge of the wing of a bird. Turkey and goose wings are usually used!!! Here is a place to read about them!!!!!

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPage?storeId=101...

I will try to get a good picture of a biot and get it put here!!!!!!

An Easy substute in this fly for biot would be Medium Black rubber legs cut short a hook gap length

as is the case with this fly. A easy way to tye this fly would be to tye the body completely with white pearl estaz and color the head with  black  marker.  Fishin' Jimmmy aka Jim Ducy

Fishin' Jimmy, Both Ideas are great especially the white pearl estez!!!!!!! Hope you tie one up as you describe and post it here!!!!!! Would love to see the different versions of this fly!!!!!!  We are only limited by our IMAGINATION!!!!!!

Jonathan, here is a better site that will tell you all you want to know, or more than you want to know about BIOTS!!!!

http://www.invictaflies.us/Articles/all_about_biots.htm

Thanks, Greg! That's a really informative page!

Beautiful fly job! Too bad that's the preferred fly color scheme over here, but I will definitely play with the color variation. Thanks!

Oh my goodness I can't tell you how many colors I tied this in because it works! Thanks Greg!

Smack on the head Jen. It resemble the mayfly nymph in 90% of the U.S. waters. On top of that, it's also mimic the early stage of the damsel and dragon fly's nymphs in 100% U.S. water. Simply need only to know the type of colors the flies in your part of the waters. Mine is light mixed with dark green, black (with speckles), and brown. "Match the hatch" as we would say.

Leo and Jen lets see your versions. Can't wait to see what YALL come up with!!!!!!

Knowledge and IMAGINATION, I am more into imagination!!!!!!
