Fish Id?

I caught this sunfish on a 6" Senko while bass fishing. It just attacked the bait! Any guesses as to it's genetics?I'd say a green sunfish/bluegill hybrid of some sort.BillContinue

Early Spring Bluegill Trip? Early Summer trip?

Looking to take my boy on his first real fishing trip (a few days) on his spring break the last week in March.  Can't think of a better fish to get him some good action than the bluegill.  Any recommendations for a good destination that time of year?  I'm in the Chicago area, looking to not venture too far.   Considering Reelfoot Lake, Kentucky Lake, Lake Norfork, some southern Illinois lakes.

Our other option for a trip is when he gets out of school sometime after June…

Waiting for Ice!

Hello All...

I'm looking forward to the ice fishing season. I've never had a lot of luck in late fall from shore. Can't wait for ice so that I can access some deeper water and some different lakes and ponds. I do not own a boat.

I'd like to get a one man portable shelter...any recommendations? I already have one of the "Ice Cube" shelters that I picked up for $25 end of season clearance a few years back. That works fine for the kids and I when we locate a good spot. But I'd like… Continue

Hey Bill...thanks for the nice compliments on the critters. Yes I do catch most of my fish on them without tipping them with bait as they do 'breathe' and undulate in the water. When I scale down to 1/64 th oz jigs, I tend to tip them, and they seen to work better in cold water conditions with bait as well.

You might want to go back to tying jigs again...it is fun and there is great appreciation in catching fish on your own creations. Talk to ya! Jim

Thank you for your comment Bill. Bluegill hybrids are interesting colorful fish. I'm not familiar with these fish as I would like to be, but for now It's 11 inches to qualify. I hope you catch one!!!

Hey Bill, I am fortunate to have 2 ponds in my area that have the hybrids, one pond has them up to about 9 in and the other pond has mostly over 10 inch fish-an incredible fishery!I may be shifting gears for crappies soon as a couple of local lakes have some serious slabs waiting for the fillet knife!

Hey Bill....don't you just love those hybrids? Man they are about the strongest panfish I think I have ever caught! I have been fortunate enough to have caught 6 this year over 11 inches...still looking for that '12' incher.
