Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Early Spring Bluegill Trip? Early Summer trip?

Looking to take my boy on his first real fishing trip (a few days) on his spring break the last week in March.  Can't think of a better fish to get him some good action than the bluegill.  Any recommendations for a good destination that time of year?  I'm in the Chicago area, looking to not venture too far.   Considering Reelfoot Lake, Kentucky Lake, Lake Norfork, some southern Illinois lakes.

Our other option for a trip is when he gets out of school sometime after June 7th.   If we go then, I'd really like to get him the Northwoods experience, and we could venture a little farther.  Considering Lake Vermillion, Pelican Lake (Orr), Cass Lake, etc.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Reelfoot is really low right now. The bluegill don't start biting till it warms up a lot. The crappie should be going good about that time. Search for Jackie van Cleave's fishing reports. Several years worth archived. Reelfoot in June is interesting, me and my son caught 8 different species of fish on one trip last year.
