Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

.... in almost 30 years. It ain't much, but its the first. I made all the rookie mistakes, worst of which was trying to push the line out. "Let it flow off the rod, dummy!" I kept telling myself.
I also try and whip the rod, going to far on the back cast. But I'll get it.
Rod... 7' Olympic
Reel... Martin #60, DA
Line... midweight level line
Leader... 4x tapered
Tippet... 4lb fluoro
Fly... Jim Cosgrove Micro Popper.

I would have preferred a weight forward line, but this is what I had at the moment. Thanks, Jim Cosgrove!

PS got me some Tooty flies today...

Okay Allen... another layer of complexity.

Fluoro sinks, even with an 18" tippet? Good to know.

No worries - I have plenty of mono!

Remember, flouro sinks.  If you're fishing dries, you want mono.  I carry 4 lbs Berkley mono, 8 lbs Flouro, and 8 lbs mono, depending on size of fish, and dry/wet scenarios....

With mine being a spin fly combo, I'm thinking the same thing.
"Overlining," as you put it, may be needed. I'm getting
some better distance today, as I get the timing and pre-loading
down. I suspect that my 7' rod may have limits on distance, though, even with a well matched line. For now, I'll make do.
I've picked up another reel, an older mint Shakespeare, for the next line
set. Got some 7.5'/4x tapered leaders coming and plenty of
4lb. Berkley fluoro tippet material.

David, you might also want to pick up a 6FWF Bass Taper fly line as well, and try both of them.  Reels with an extra spool help with this, or a second, cheaper reel.  If the 5FWF line doesn't seem to cast well, go to the 6FWF line.

I had to "overline" my 5wt to a 6wt line.  The rod is graphite, and is really a 6wt or 7wt.

Imagine, John - we, two, elite! Who'd've thunk it!

David -That's the big brother of the first fly rod caught gill of the year for me that I caught last week . Now we're both ELITISTS! Lol

Thanks Tooty and Ken.

I've used the fly rod  along time ago, but truth be told, I was never good at it. I fished a lot with my BIL and HE was into it, so, by virtue of proximity I got to use them.
