Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

We caught this fish from our Pond that we thought had been dead for years, while we were restocking some BG in June.

I thought so to considering it came from a pond that is only about 3 feet deep and has all but died off so to speak. It had salt water dumped in it about 15 years ago and killed just about all the fish (we thought all were dead), but some apparently have made it.

No, but that's a pretty good looking fish! I wouldn't mind some that looked like that!

Tony,

You have any HBG that look like this one?  I hate the fact he swallowed the hook or I would have taken him to the pond I feed.

Here is an odd colored HBG we caught out of a pond that is only about 3ft deep any more, and we thought all the fish were gone by now.  Now sure what it has been eating but seems healthy, I would have liked to moved him to my pond that I feed, but he was hooked too deep.

I would say it is a HBG just not sure what the cross is or the % of each. This is the first one I have seen with these colors.

He probably is stunted, plus I would like to know how old of it fish it was as like I mentioned this pond had seemed dead for year until this summer when we finally caught about 4 of these and 1 LMB. We only kept these 2 as they swallowed the hook and were going to die anyway.

Thanks

Zach, everything I think I know about bluegill I've picked up here. I have never seen a greensunfish. Magnolia calls this an HBG, which I take to be a Hybrid Bluegill Greensunfish. I have learned on here that a sure tell for a hybrid is the yellowish color in the fins and tail. I also would never have been able to tell you it 's sex until I had been here awhile. By the longish ear tab AND the blackish tips on the scales across it's forehead and upper back, I say it is male. It seems to have a long nose and large lower jaw. I don't know what that means so I will hang around awhile longer till I learn about that. I suspect it might indicate stunting, but I'm guessing.
