Do a little research Bobby.....Mattamuskeet is a very remote area being a national refuge now...little or no lodging or eaterys.....That's fine for hard core fishermen like us but touch n' go for families...Lot of folks visit the Outer Banks and take a day trip to Mattamuskeet....Not trying to plan for you just giving you some facts......There's a few little farming/fishing communities nearby but things move pretty slow in these parts if you know what I mean.......I love it but never stay overnight since I live a couple hours away.....

Bowfin and gar - Big an Ugly

Comment by Jeffrey D. Abney on February 6, 2012 at 7:58pm

I've caught several bowfin in Merchant's but no gar........Lake Mattamuskeet Canals are a sure bet for longnose gar.......I bluegill fished there one day in 2008 and caught my 30 gill limit along with a dozen gars plus several break offs on my light terminal tackle! My recommendation for Merchants is to visit in the Spring and/or early Summer before the swamp vegetation gets going...it can get thick during the long hot Summer especially in low rain years.....

Good eye...South Carolina has served you well David.....more mistletoe there than anywhere I've ever been!

I'll make you change it as soon as I can get some Spring 2012 shots! The water is cool here the way it wraps the top of this Spillway....sometimes you use it to navigate out of the swamp on an otherwise quiet day.......
