Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This pump house is a historical symbol built in the early 1900s to pump out the oldest natural lake in North Carolina for farming. The lake has been allowed to fill back in and is part of a National Wildlife Refuge.....I bank fish these canals for big bluegill while enjoying a beautiful outdoor location with so much history.....Check it out if you're ever in coastal North Carolina......The canal with the reflection was dug by hand in the 1800s to a depth of 9 feet to support natural drainage before the pump house was engineered....

thats odd cause they started to get really active before spawn here at the end of February . they then spawn in late march..See we dont have stuff like that around me..Its State Parks but their not very nice..I went to Hanging rock this past summer and seen coppernose's so big i thought they were bass.

Lots of good roads throughout the refuge to access many good locations on the main lake and the canal system.....

Derrick there is miles and miles of canals in this Refuge that were used back in the early 1900s to keep the 120 thousand acre lake drained for fertile farmland.....Lake Mattamuskeet averages 4 to 6 feet below sea level so these canals were dug 9 feet deep and 40 feet wide to naturally gravity drain the lake bed.....Bass normally spawn in eastern North Carolina in April.....These canals are relatively bare of big structure but have spillways throughout which make for great bass fishing when the water is moving.....
