Jim,I'm continually zooming in and out and the camera lets me know if I'm "zoomed to close" by beeping....my camera is set on "automatic" and the aperture is set "fast" for stopping any motion or splashing water....I have 4 different cameras and this "latest"and the one I've been taking these fish images with is a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 (8.1 megs)....others are fuji's and a Nikon...all digitals of course...also into macro/bird/wildlife/ photography....I never fish anymore without a camera along...nice to look at these photos on your computer when it's winter and 35 below...lol
Thats the tactic! I have been doing basically the same thing and if I get 1 of 20 that I like then I am happy! Do you use the telephoto option on your digital ( I use a Cannon Powershot 7.1 mgp) ?

Lol!....Jim,I let em fight first to "wear em out"....hold the rod "high" in my left hand while focusing and snapping images with the camera in my right hand.....not easy at times trust me...watch so you don't get water splashed from the fishes tail on the camera lens (happens all the time).......take a "bunch" of images(today I took 78) and you might get a half dozen that are "worthy" of doing anything with.....get better at it after a few years...
