Nice perch. Waxies are big in Ohio as well, like Allen said, especially during ice fishing season. It sure is a nice living 10 minutes from Lake Erie to get these fish. They certainly are tasty.

OK, my mistake <g> I figured that since you can get them easily in San Diego, and San Diego is pretty far south, that maybe they get them from the south. Of course, that makes the blank stare at the Sheridan Lake Marina when I asked for wax worms even more perplexing, since South Dakota was part of the north, last I checked :-)

There were three people working in the marina store at the time. One of them had told me he's from Florida, so if waxies are a northern thing, it makes sense that he didn't know - but the other two were locals, and they'd never heard of them either.  Maybe they're only popular in the heart of the ice fishing belt?

ALL I CAN SAY IS;; HERE IN THE SOUTH;; IF YOU ASK FOR WAXIES OR MAGGOTS;; WE WILL LOOK YOU RIGHT IN THE EYE; AND ASK;; WHAT PART OF THE NORTH ARE YOU FROM ?? LOL

look like a great vacation there JB... like your rig!

Most likely Waxies are a Northern thing.  They're used in ice-fishing a lot, along with Spikes (maggots).  Now that I'm up in MI, I've been fishing Waxies almost exlusively as my bait option.  I typically tip a microjig with a Waxie.

I caught it on big, fat healthy red worms from my wife's composter, transported all the way to South Dakota in the motorhome's fridge :-)

Interestingly, I asked about wax worms at the marina bait shop, and they'd never heard of them. They had red worms, Canadian nightcrawlers, and minnows. I guess waxies must be a southern and western thing, maybe?

GOOD LOOKING PERCH;; WHAT TYPE OF BAIT DID YOU USE ??

Very nice catch there. Perch..upper CA delta?

Comment by JBplusThuy on July 13, 2016 at 5:22pm

They truly are. The last time I caught a yellow perch was in the same lake, in more or less the same spot, forty years ago or nearly. I'd been waiting to get back there ever since, and I finally made it this summer :-)

The lake has a lot more power boaters and water skiers than it had in the seventies, and I think the entire marina on the opposite shore from the campground is new, but it's pretty empty of recreational boaters on weekdays.
