Do you love big bluegill?
Our first real cold snap with arctic air this past week has pushed our fish into the basins........fished two of my favorites this weekend and landed 100 gills.........the fish today were larger on average and were taken with 1/64th ounce jigs tipped with live baby crawfish.......another deadly favorite of mine on the Albemarle.....

Looking forward to getting back in this basin with some ice jigs and live grass shrimp.....with the weather we are having our water temps will be dropping below 40 degrees later this week so I will go even smaller than 1/64th..............
Thanks David.......I'm by no stretch an authority on winter time fishing but I have taken several pointers from anglers on this forum and applied them in my waters and it has paid off.........I had always fished for speckles more often in the winter months but now it's 60/40 for me bluegill to crappie...........location is the toughest challenge...........the amount of deep water available in a certain body of water is an important element..........the more there is the more the fish are likely to be spread out.........I fish a region with very limited deep water and deep in my area is 10 feet and over..........since it's limited in my area I have begun to mark these locations in recent years and the fish have returned every season.....then I go much smaller than I normally fish and it usually means a few takes.........patience is much more important this time of the year.......
Thanks Dick........nice dynamics on these fish especially the one in my left hand which is starting to take on the round signature that I see in our heaviest gills........
Another dandy pair of gills with some great markings for sure.
