Probably not a hobby Ill be picking up soon....

Thanks, Tony!  I photographed the last rod outdoors, but sunlight is really difficult to deal with in the middle of the day even if you have a shady spot - it's just too intense.  So this time I shot indoors.  Much easier.

Beautiful work Walt......love the photo technique also, great job showcasing the rod. Really brings out the detail.

Thanks, David and Dick!  David, I have a Jet mini-lathe for turning the wood; the lathe was four-hundred-something on sale.  I have a parting tool and two spindle gouges, woodworking tools, that cost a total of about $140 for the three.  I have a three-jaw micro-chuck and a four-jaw Nova chuck, total for the two about $190 with shipping (had to order the micro, not available anywhere locally).  As far as general rod-wrapping equipment, I have a power wrapper that was about $330 with shipping, a power epoxy mixer that was $35 with shipping, a multi-rod power rod dryer that was $200...So the short answer would be, too much!

Just the components for this rod cost $350.  The birch bark alone was $50, and the two kinds of burl wood - stabilized box elder burl dyed black, and stabilized spalted big leaf maple burl - cost $90.

Quality work Walt.

Beautiful work, Walt. I like the full wels handle and the bone or burlwood treatments.

How much do you estimate that you have tied up in tools and fixtures for this work?

Thanks for the love, Tooty and Leo!  Much appreciated!

David, true. It's meant to be used. I'll use it when I'm retired, and have plenty of time to fish, away from all the uncivilized anglers. Otherwise, I'll use my indestructible rods: the broomstick.

HEY LEO I'D USE IT !!!!!!!!!!! MEANT TO BE USED AND ENJOYED IN MY OPINION...........

HEY WALT NEVER saw the spinning rod pics but will look it up right now. I can believe lots of work went into these over a period of 7 months. This thing is fabulous and you deserve all the praise ya get and wished I could afford one of these !!!!!!!!!
