Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I had a large predator hooked for roughly 40 seconds...never got to see it but it was acting more like a big catfish or bowfin, bass normally surface and tear off.......I was able to pick the short piece up after the break occurred but the fish easily pulled off after I lost my resistance....

I cant shake the urge to bring a tele, either, Jeff.

I have several in all lengths but I think Ill settle on the 13 footer. Longer ones are a bit too unwieldy for the canoe and shorter ones dont quite have the reach.

But like you, I always tote one along.

Yep....a fun way to fish even if you break one now and then......I had terrible winds and a moving boat too......just isn't meant to be sometimes but I will always have a long pole with me!

That's a shame Jeffrey. I had a blast on the tele-pole yesterday at the local lake. I took your advise and went with 12 pound mono with the special tip-wrap to secure the line and it clearly paid off on my big channel cat that would have otherwise easily broken off.

I was somewhat limited as I was bank fishing, but I found that if I could constantly change directions on the fish he couldn't really get too much of a head of steam. The one long run he did make was parrallel to the bank, so I was able to run with him, let him tire, then change the pressure on him a few more times. It was fun!

Jeffrey sounds like the big bruisers are coming out.

I was hoping to land it for a picture but the fish has to fight for it's life so no worries.......we'll get a couple more set up and get back on them.....I also broke ten pound test on a 7 to 8 pound bass that I nearly got to touch and saw three different times on spin casting gear but it wasn't meant to be today.......I often catch some of the biggest bass of the year in October so we'll see......

Sorry for the breakage Jeff I know the fight had to be decent one but once and awhile even the fish wins.

I had a 1/32 glow pink jig on tipped with a live cricket under a quill float John.....It was one of those times where I really felt over matched and was giving the fish the pole if you will to extend the fight.......the pole broke on a lunge into deeper water and I was just trying to keep steady pressure but not pulling......I was able to pick up the seven foot section with the fish still on but shortly after the hook straightened out.......at least I got my quill float back.....LOL

What a moment that must have been !! What bait Jeffrey ,what offering did this monster find appealing ?

I've caught Bowfin up to 12 pounds in this creek before and had several other large ones near the boat over the years.......I bet big channel cat because they arrive shallow when it cools and this fish wasn't moving fast like a bowfin normally does on hook set......just a strong steady pull trying to hug bottom......I got my quill float back after the hook was straightened.......so all was not lost.......

bowfins are well known as being tackle busters!!   that's my guess!!
