Thanks, Jeffrey. I learned something new. It's something I would never even conceive of here in PA.

Hey Bruce this region is surrounded with millions of acres of wetlands.......although peaceful and beautiful......the silent killer is high water events flooding the wetlands and forcing the runoff that depletes oxygen levels on a particular body of water.........In most cases this just means lower levels of dissolved oxygen which means inactive fish.........worst case is a sudden depletion from a hurricane which kills thousands of fish which don't have a chance to move into better water........On a Scale of  0 to 15, I look for at least a 6 at times like this but the higher the better..........Under 6 you can expect nearly zero fish activity with the exception of a few species that are low oxygen tolerant but that doesn't include most gamefish..........This region is vast and you can have one creek at a 3, go two miles and the next will be a 7 because of high ground around it or no wetlands in the general location......we did not get a kill from Hurricane Matthew but we still have areas below a six more than a month later............

Why do you measure oxygen levels?

Thanks guys........gator numbers are low but increasing with no hunting in North Carolina..........I would pass on legs out......between gators and bull sharks I wouldn't push it...........oxygen levels with a portable tester.........

That would be a great float trip. It's just beautiful! Maybe some day I'll get to see it.

It's a vast and scenic area.......many folks don't realize how awesome it is to have the Albemarle Estuary in our back yard.....
