Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I'm only 15 yards from this huge gator but he will not submerge.....he's keeping an eye on us!

Like you David...I don't fear them I just respect them but it has got to the point that Gators are around every turn......I went to four bayous and one river last week down in Louisiana and saw several gators in each, even around the populated areas.......People were water skiing just a few blocks from this location......

Angelo,

I suspect growing gator populations are due mostly to people's "nature loving" notions. After four decades of tree hugging "awareness," we find that people want to embrace and even protect, such creatures - while living their modern, insular lives. Eco tourism is booming, animal channels blossom on TV and everyone wants to be "in touch" with Nature.

Where once they would have been hunted, creatures like alligators are now accepted as part of the neighborhood. Even where contact with them poses some risk and *real* understanding of their ways is lacking, people are sometimes lulled by this Kumbaya Mentality. Their motto is, "Cant we all just get along?" (it's at this point that someone usually gets attacked and mauled...)

They don't alarm me, because I lived in Florida for years. They were common place, really and once you left the beaten path they were there. But I maintain a healthy respect for them and I make every effort to keep them in their place.... which is far from me and doing their OWN thing.

P.S. This applies to snakes, scorpions, spiders, porcupines, skunks and so on. These things don't scare me, per se, but I prefer they stay over THERE.

Check out my group "Fishing North Carolina Style" when you get a chance Angelo.....you might enjoy what you find in this section.........Roanoke River is a good catfishing destination in North Carolina!

Bet the weather was great down there last week. Gator's, Gator's, Gator's, where are they all coming from traveling the water system's? Always wanted to make a trip to N.C. to the Roanoke river for Catfish a few years back but never had the chance. People say that NC have great water for fishing a variety of species

These shots are from Southeastern Louisiana during a trip I made last week Angelo.....I live near the outer banks of North Carolina and we have gators here in our rivers as well.......David is down in South Carolina and forget it......South Carolina waters are filling up with large gators..............

I like staying right here in Jersey, only thing I worried about is the snakes. Me & my Wife went to Florida few years back to Lake Okeechobee that lake was just filled with gator's! Where you all from?

That is a whopper! I'd be scared in my kayak, for sure. I cant wait to see the first one on the Edisto.....

In a boat, Angelo they are no bother. I even made up a saying, "The fishing is better when the gators are wetter."

Comment by Angelo C Mastrando Jr. on March 26, 2012 at 5:58pm

I believe it 100% being on the edge man, I'll be to worried about the gator's than fishing my eye's would be wide open! Have you ever reel in a half eaten fish from a gator?

Comment by Jeffrey D. Abney on March 26, 2012 at 5:48pm

It keeps you on edge Angelo.....they particularly like to chase down popping bugs when you're fly fishing.......We've actually hooked smaller gators on flies right in the middle of active bluegill fishing......My grandfather always insisted the fishing was better around gators because they stirred things up and the bluegill take full advantage........
