Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

My son is calling these "liberal" flies, because they have bleeding hearts. I just laughed!
Your basic Super Cypert Minnow with red marabou quills added behind the eyes.
I left the tail a bit longish (hook shank length); it just looks good to me that way.

Our fellow tyer, Don Schmotzer, swears by these here in the Carolina Midlands.*

He has a rather short list of go-to flies for our waters, in fact:

Surface

Foam Spiders

Various poppers

Disc flies (Sneaky Pete)

Subsurface

MM Minnow (marabou)

Cypert Minnow

Weighted Cap Spider

Like I said, a pretty short list.

* From the Colloquial Correctness files - When folks around here say "Carolina," they mean one thing: SOUTH CAROLINA.

While there are two states that bear the name, those in the know use the word, "Carolina," as a wholly separate term. If the upper of the the states' is meant, the word "North" accompanies the designation.

Nice!  I like the marabou "gills".  I have a similar idea that I want to do soon, as soon as I can get some chartreuse and white rabbit zonkers.

david i use minnow head jigs .i put stick on eyes and coat the head with clear /glitter nail polish.wrap with chenille and pull the mylar tubing over like you do.makes a nice jig

I've seen something similar, Tony.
Tied so the nose butts up to the lead ball on round jigheads, the jighead itself painted orange or pink - and the whole lure ends up looking like a small minnow with a fish EGG in its mouth.
This supposedly will trigger a strong feeding drive in predatory fish, particularly those on the bed.
A glass or plastic bead on long shank hooks would do as well on this tie.

That's awesome! I agree with Jim C, I think these would work well on a jig.
