Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

First off what is this on the end of this fly line. Second how can you tell what size line you have if you didn't buy it new? I bought a used reel with good line but no idea what size it is. It does float. Help me if you can.

Thanks Mark I've been tying my leaders on with the nailless knot so when I came across this I didn't know what to do. The line is too good to discard.

The classic way is to attach the leader is using a nail knot. Much easier to use a loop to loop. Tie a loop using a surgeons knot or a perfection loop at the thick end of the leader.  pass the loop on the end of  the fly line through the loop on the leader then put the bitter end of the fly line loop and pull tight

Lee is right.

It's a braided loop on the end, and the fly line weight is based on the first 30' weight in grains. Google AFTMA fly line weights and you should find a chart.

PS

If the line is thick in the middle and tapered on the ends.....probably a DT line. Fat on one end with tapers....probably a WF line, and NO tapers......probably a Level line, which seem to be getting harder to come by.

Kieth,

That looks like a braided loop. Works under the principle of the Chinese finger trap.....the harder you pull, the tighter it gets. Very secure system  but not necessary for smaller types of species and bulky maybe for lighter applications. You could find the line weight by weighing the first 30' A manufacturer's website should list gr. wts corresponding to line wts.

     ....lee s.

manufacturer's web site should list corresponding gr. weights.

KEITH;; FIRST OFF;; ONLY REAL WAY OF KNOWING WHAT TYPE OF FLY LINE YO UHAVE; IS WHEN YOU BUY IT ; STILL IN A BOX !! THE BOX WOULD BE MARKED AS ; EITHER A SINKING; WEIGHT FORWARD;; DOUBLE TAPERED; ' AS WELL AS THE SIZE OF THE LINE,, SOME PEOPLE; WILL STICK A PIECE OF TAPE TO THE SIDE OF THE REEL; WRITE WHAT TYPE OF LINE IT IS ON THE REEL.  WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING;; YOU MIGHT HAVE A 2 WT LINE; UP TO A 8 WEIGHT !;; NOT A GOOD IDE3A TO USE IT ;;  IT COULD DAMAGE YOUR ROD !!  THAT-- THING; AS I CALL IT;; IS A DIFFERENT WAY OF THREADING A FLY LINE INTO A LEADER TYPE HOLDER;;   YOU CAN TIE YOUR LEADER ONTO THAT;; THING.. PERSONNELY;; I HAVE NEVER USED ONE OF THOSE; DONT KNOW A LOT ABOUT THEM;; MY OWN PREFERRENCE IS A NO KNOT EYELET;;; ITS A TYPE OF STICK PIN; WITH A BARB ON IT; PUSHED INTO THE FLY LINE.. IT WONT LET GO !!  IT HOLDS GREAT   AND I HAVE CAUGHT A LOT OF BIG FISH ; USING IT  I GET THEM FROM ACADEMY SPORTS; FOR ABOUT 50CENTS FOR 2 OF THEM !!
