Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

My son is calling these "liberal" flies, because they have bleeding hearts. I just laughed!
Your basic Super Cypert Minnow with red marabou quills added behind the eyes.
I left the tail a bit longish (hook shank length); it just looks good to me that way.

The rotation screw is a wing nut smaller than 1/4 inch fine threads. When I get to the hardware I'll check it out for you.

Dudes - ha! Figure of speech.

Get me at least the rotation screw, then.

Without going to the hardware I won't be able to know. It isn't a 14/20 threads are to fine, it not even 1/4 inch it's smaller but once you get the head set I don't think you will be moving it much I really don't think its an issue. When I go to the hardware I will get you the size though and by the way no dudes here.

The rotation tension screw is one of the few complaints about the Apex vise I've seen. I don't like the idea of a set screw, needing another tool to keep up with, etc. Can you determine the size of the threads that the thumbscrew uses? It's probably 1/4-20.

The clunky wingnut is kind of an anomaly to me, too - yet the thumbscrew convenience is worth keeping.

In fact, can you dudes get me the thread for both screws: head position and the rotation tension?

yes dicky- I agree I like it being a U S A  made vise!  my only draw back to it is-- the wing nut that allows the head to rotate-- I keep bumping it; and it unscrews a lot.  wish it was on the opposite side.  I;m thinking I might replace it with a set screw; just cause its smaller; shouldn't hit it as often.  the more you use the rotating head; the easier it gets!  kind of like you have to break it in dicky!  I had looked at several different types of vises;;  I just decided on this one.  for me; it works great!!!

Carl I have your offsprings vise looks the same. I wasn't saying it doesn't rotate just that the Danville rotates so much more easily. I thinks its a good vice or I wouldn't have got it. It will work fine and I like the base on it and the biggest + USA.

Wow! And I use the hell out of it!

well dicky- for what its worth-- I;ve been using a apex vise for about a year now!  look on I think page 4 on my page!! it rotates very well; has strong jaws; mine has a coil spring behind the jaws so I can hang thread; or other material out of the way; or I can remove the coil spring; for any reason.  and david- right after I got my apex vise; is when I gave you my vise I had  used for at least 10 to 15 years!

The cramped work space around the jaws is probably the most consistently observed negative of the Danvise.

Other than that it gets the highest marks in the $50-$100 category.

the Apex is just behind, and I mean just a little. For the slight increase in cost, you get an all metal vice built like a tank. And as you note it has a longer throat for bigger flies. Its only drawback is you cannot interchange or replace the jaws easily. For us in the bass-bluegill-trout crowd (between 24 and about 5/0 hook sizes?), that is probably never going to be an issue.

I like the Danvise the only bad thing is when tying my crawfish I have many things tied off the front and they get in the way of each other cause there's not a big work area because the way the jaw comes in where as the apex has a straight shot nothing to get in the way so it will make the crawfish an easier tie. Other than that for the price I think I gave 70 bucks for it I'm not going to complain it's a been a good vise for me and solid but to light for a base mount don't even know if they make one for it.
