Their range includes Oklahoma but I don't have any experience catching Fliers there...Some of the Oklahoma gang will comment I'm sure....
Has anyone caught one of these in Oklahoma? I wonder if you could stock them in a pond?
I wish we had these around here, They are such a great looking fish
1 Pound 4 ounces Jim....shared by a North Carolina and a Georgia angler......10 to 11 inches would be a giant......my personal best was 9 inches long and weighed 1 pound 1 ounce during their early season spawning.......Cool fish though!
Fliers are way cool...almost an unknown to many panfish addicts. What is the world record? I'm thinking a 10 to 11 incher is a giant...?
I work it in Tooty with a very understanding Spouse....yesterday was a day off from work and fishing.....we were tourists down in Charleston, S.C........had to settle for a Seafood Platter and some Bloody Mary's....LOL
Zach I have eaten Fliers and they are very tasty just like other sunfish....But since I've been within ounces of the World Record for a Flier I've been putting all the fish over 7 inches back......I have several fisheries between South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia that have a great chance of the record fish based on my catches over the years......I have purposely not fished the Virginia waters the last three years but plan to go this Summer to gage where the fish are.....It's just a personal challenge and a fish species that's relatively unknown......Thanks Bruce......I'm trying to get as many species publicity so that our site can be # 1 for all sunfish species...We're well on our way!
HEY JEFFREY, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU HAVE TIME TO WORK!!!!!!!!! ALL that prime time looking panfish water would make me want to CALL OFF WORK!!!!!!!!!
HEY JEFFREY, great pic and they kind of have stripes like Stripers up here. Also look to have a larger mouth than a gill or red ear. NICE ONE!
Excellent photo! That's one of the best images we have of a flier on this site. Mr. Gronaw has also provided us with some great pictures.
