Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The big bream are still on beds in the shallows. No boat, and it's too far to cast, so I've been catching potato chip sized coppernose and using them for bass bait. Can't wait for the slabs to swim back to the deep end of the lake... any day now!

I want to put a shark hook in a coon skin cap and go casting with a surf rod! Yeah, Cartman rode Cthulu, but the creature is actually from old horror books by H. P. Lovecraft... "The thing that SHOULD NOT BE!"... the evil lord of the darkness of the deep, and master of all the old demons. Realllly CREEPY books! I just think it's funny... and i loved those South Parks!
And these bass want live bream! fortunately, there are plenty in the lake. I'm going to go drift in the johnboat as soon as the wind dies down, and hope for another chance at Cthulu... the thing that SHOULD NOT BE!

I haven't witnessed a duck getting eaten... but there are fewer of them now, and they stand on the shore looking nervous... this is FL, so it could be ANYTHING! A Nile Monitor? An Anaconda? I don't dangle my toes in the water...

I weighed Ms. Piggy this spring, and she weighed 12 lb 6 oz. The other fish [I will name it when I'm holding it, but I'm thinking "Cthulu". google that and laugh!] is honestly pushing 20 lb. The new FL record, if I can catch her... UNFORTUNATELY, she's a picky eater. Ms. Piggy is, well, a PIG! she pounces on a bait, QUICK. Silly fish won't learn :-)

The little lake is behind my Moms house in Pensacola FL. An average neighborhood lake in FL. I pull 10 inch coppernose bream out of it regularly. That's my favorite! I didn't start bothering the bass until they started snatching bream off of my hook, and trying to eat my stringer whole!

I have never caught a bass in this lake over 1 lb on anything but live bream. I will use a 10 inch fish for bait... and toss it in the cooler if the bass don't take it quick.

I've thrown everything I have at them! Not one bass over a pound, on anything artificial. Giant bass were eating bream off of my line as I was reeling them in, so I put one on a bass hook and gave them what they wanted. Works like a charm! Too well, actually... if I didn't release them, there wouldn't be any big ones left in this little lake. I eat an occasional 4 lb or under, but I feel these fish deserve respect. This neighborhood was leveled by hurricane Ivan, and they survived 18 feet of storm surge [ocean water] in their lake... and the toxic remains of shattered homes, soaking in the lake. Survivors!

My research on bass brought forward a lot of interesting facts. The FL strain of largemouth bass is much less likely to take artificials, compared to the northern strains. BUT, a fish that will hit artificials will produce offspring with the same tendency. There are hatcheries crossing the two types with that in mind, to produce a fish close to the FL phenotype, with the taste for plastics of a northern bass. I've watched guys catch FL bass on 12" white worms rigged Goofy style... but it's never worked for me! They fish a long time to catch a few. I've caught big bass the INSTANT my bream went back in the water! They're down there, watching us reel them in... waiting for us to throw them back!

Thanks Marisa! The bass was caught on a potato chip sized coppernose bream, under a big foam float. Her name is Ms. Piggy, and I've caught her about 8 or 9 times... but I'm after her big sister... THAT fish is HUGE! She's broken me off or thrown my hook 4 times. Potential state record, and if I catch her, she'll go to the state fish hatchery and live a good life, being hand fed fat goldfish and making baby bass. I have to get her out of the pond. I'm afraid she's been eating the ducks...

The glasses are 98 cent sunglasses frames. I filed the lenses down smaller when my last frame broke, cut the plastic to make them half frames, and superglued like a mad scientist. When the arms broke, I found a blue pair and swapped parts. They were just meant to get me by until I could afford a real pair... it's been about five years... still trying to get that done... But hey, I kind of like them too! And thanks :-)
