I more than likely fish with the tail up. Tried both ways but when fishing weeds i just figure in my mind if the tail is up it it less likely to catch on as many weeds and I really fish weeds heavy. Since were on the topic of curly tails I love really soft tail in doing so when reeling slowly the tail still has action. The downside is you change your baits out more often but I believe it catches me more fish.

I like the tail side up... I think it looks better when twitched along the bottom.
