20150504-WIXOM LAKE CRAPPIES ~Numerous Crappies in one afternoon

Early this afternoon started with some bad choices… I decided to head out on a cool blustery afternoon out on one of the toughest lakes in the neighborhood… at the dock I decided to head south on the reservoir towards some good P’seed havens. Water temp at the dock was low 60’s. Further south I went the temperature was dropping… mid to upper 50’s at the extreme south end where current is channeled between two legs of the reservoir…. Not good… the creek feeders seemed dead at this end so I decided to go a few miles north to an area that warms very quickly. A good spot at the early season.
As I was headed north the weather began to change… sun came out warmed up instantly. The wind also died a bit. Watching the sonar for fish nothing deep or at the first break line... Stopped and hit a few historically good for me shorelines spots … nothing. Pulled into a good spot at the upper reaches of the creek arm and joined a boat that was presently fishing. Asked if they had any luck and they responded “few hits”. Not good I thought. Proceeded to fish and wham… one fish after another for the next few hours… I had dinner in 20mins time. Went on to the GOPRO and captured a hour and a half of nonstop action… very few jumbo fish… but just fun overall.
Fish were all caught on 1/32 and 1/16 oz jig heads with YAMMA MINNOW 2.5” and Berkley Power minnow type soft plastic baits

thanks Leo... the creek channel had an abundance of 8-10" ... i kept some for dinner. I still need that 14" plus for the Master Angler. Fishing with the UL spinning rod kept me in the fun most of the afternoon.

Great abundant set of info. Manage to track down the species and length you wanted for 2015?

Thanks Carl, Richard... the honey hole or creek channel was filled with midsized crappies running along the bank preparing to spawn… I caught no males with tuxes so it’s still early and right on schedule for the mid to end of May.... numbers of crappies would hold at any wood in the water the best wood in the water was a windblown tree that’s been sitting the past couple years... it  seemed to hold the most fish and I would catch them two in a minute pace.... but I would catch them all the way up and down the bank also. I spent over four hours just catching fish on more than 90% of my casts.... awesome timing!

The boat next two me kept zooming my spot most of the afternoon. I would catch a fish and they would toss baits/lures in my area and end up with very little to show for their aggressive efforts... ha-ha so there has to be some technique and rigging involved.

Video showing the fishing pace for crappies in the creek channels.
