Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

We did our first seine yesterday at the hatchery. The first hatch of fry happened sometime between the last week of May and the first week of June - since that time there have been at least six discrete hatches. I told my business partner a couple weeks ago that a few from the first hatch were getting up around six inches and he didn't believe me. Turns out I was a little off - the biggest one in the net in this photo was closer to 7". Not bad for a fish that's a little under five months old.

Thanks, guys!  I can't believe how fast they're growing.  And this is in highly-crowded conditions - there were probably at least 30,000 in the pond before we seined.  When they get in less-crowded conditions their growth will speed up.

Wow a lot of growth for a fish less than 1 year old fish.
