Do you love big bluegill?
Don was killing 'em today!Massive lepomii (sunfish), nice salmoides (bass), and the biggest ictalurid (catfish) I've ever seen on the fly - actually, the FIRST I've seen on the fly!And these are…Continue

I'll admit, I'm lazy. Why expend a lot of effort and gas trying to find ponds, when all you have to do is open up Google Earth, zoom in on your area, and start looking?I know that I've found a LOT…Continue

Good luck tomorrow David, hope it's #2.
I'm with Mark, I do fish some of the reservoirs in the area now and then and it is fun to do so, but most of my fishing is done in local ponds because it is relaxing and usually low pressure, plus I normally catch bigger panfish in ponds anyway. Around me there's not too many public lakes that offers good numbers of plus size panfish. The majority of my photos are of fish that were caught in ponds less than 10 acres in size. All my personal bests for sunfish other than rock bass were caught in ponds, as well as my best largemouths and channel cats.
Thanks, Jim
I have a pond nearby, maybe 20 acres+ where the owner charges $5/day on the honor system (drop box).
He has set out a few picnic spots, but the place is pretty rough. He doesn't really do anything with it, no "management," per se, or upkeep maintenance. At one time he had a sign out by the road, but it's about faded away.
When I asked him about stocking, his response was, "Well, it's been a long time...."
HE said it was once very popular, but he let it go sometime back because he just couldn't police the trash and junk people left. From what I can tell from on-site visits today, the place has not been getting many visitors. This could mean one of two things:
1. Its gone to pot and isn't much of "fishing destination" anymore.
2. It's been forgotten, people turned off by the $5 fee
In the first case, won't know without trying. Mr. Davis, the owner, assures me there are fish in the pond - whatever that means. In the case of #2, it is possible that it has rebounded from past pressures and is a potential A-List location.
I'm going tomorrow to check it out again, this time with fly rod in hand.
Hi ,I have fished lakes 40 miles long year after year , but I think we tend to go back to our root's to fish ponds.I have better luck and not so much pressure fishing ponds .Thanks for all the great posts and pics Sleepy
Yep! Me too Jim!
Tony...almost every one of the better bluegill ponds I fish, those that consistantly produce high numbers of big gills or hybrids, have stunted bass populations, with maybe a giant bass or two swimming.
And that's just fine with me!
David...this particular lake, along with 2 others, is owned and operated by a lawn and garden nursery center and charge $10 a day to fish all day, catch and release only. Not bad when you consider a local county park charges $18 a day just to enter and launch a boat and the state launch fees are 11 bucks just to put a boat in the water. I fish it a couple times a year and always catch a ton of fish...great palce to take kids, which are 'no charge'.
Thanks Tony, I feel better!
No worries David....striving to achieve balance in a pond environment is one thing.....but maintaining it is quite another. It's a near constant effort on the part of the pondowner.
Tony youre killing me - I love the word balance. Now what am I going to do?
Seriously, I gotta think that it is still the right idea to promote.
Some great pics Jim and Im curious what the "small fee" is that you pay to fish that one BOW.
J. Cosgrove - that sounds like a super resource and well worth the money to be a member.
