i just started fly fishing last year, so I have only used a floating line. If i wanted to fish clousers and streamers, will they get down ok with floating line, or is a sinking line the way to go?

I have fly fished for many years but I have never caught a crappie on the fly. A lot on minnows but never on a fly. I checked in to learn how to catch a few on the long rod.Continue

Dave, do you have a pic of the wire gill minnow pattern you use?
Thanks Greg and Dave good to be here . I have tied several Clouser and others small minnow patterns. Some of the speed darts I tie for shad would probably do well also. Never thought of suspending under an indicator that's a great idea. I do like the thought of the camo fly line have to look into that. And I am not a purest soaking a fly in Gulp juice is not a no no for me lol.
For Crappie ans Bullgills,I don't think you can beat a Clouser Minnow or a Wire Gill Minnow in sizes six through two. I tie them sparsley in chartruse and white or black and white with some crystal flash. You can fish this on an intermediate sinking line or go real crazy and fish them using an indicator (bobber) and suspend them. Oh and maybe add some fish atractant, this is not cheating ,just added confidance. Good luck ,Dave
Eddie, Welcome to the group!!!!! I use a camo intermediate sinking line 90% of the time, it sinks 1 1/2" to 2" per second, I also have a faster sinking line, 8" to 9" per second!!!! The intermediate is clear and will keep you in the strike zone longer several companies make it I use the cortland brand a little less expensive!!!!!
Hey Guys new to the group. I love to fly fish and I love to Crappie fish just haven't caught any on the fly. I am hoping to gain some advice here to put into action soon. It is Crappie time here in NC and I am ready to get my kayak out there after them with the long rod. I have read the previous post and have some good ideas from them. Our fish are holding in water 20 or so ft deep and suspending any where from 8 to 12ft . I see some of you use sinking line, I can get down 12 ft with my floating line and a 12 ft leader. Does the sinking line work better, keeping the fly in the zone longer? Anyway hope to learn from you guys . So thanks in advance.
Eddie
lol you got it boss
You are welcome and we will be looking for pictures!!!!!!
Awesome!!! Thanks alot Greg you are truly a gentleman and a scholar!
