I do A LOT of reading, and this is one of the things mentioned.
I guess it's kind of like college. You get "theory", or book-learning, but "lab" work has to be real-world....
What's surprising to me, is that all this material actually sinks in, and gets used, resulting in boated fish. I do not claim to be a "pro" when it comes to fishing for those green fish......
Thanks for the report Allen ! I should remember your suggestion as I feel I am sometimes guilty of overworking a lure when searching for fish . I also should think of the image of a stealthy patient Blue Heron not a crazed run and gun madman .
Well, I hit up Beggs last night. Got there about 5:30. Water temp 87, wind out of the south at about 5 mph, water clarity about 4'. Had three rods with me. My standard troll/cast pair, with a Clackin' Minnow on the trolling rod and a 3/8 oz chrome lipless crankbait on the rig for casting baits. Also had my UL rod, rigged with a slip-float and minnow hook. I was pulling my trolling minnow bucket. I planned to drown some minnows if I could find any fish hanging around a channel ledge, etc.
I am again reminded of why I do NOT like to use my trolling minnow bucket. To much drag.....
I caught a small LMB that wasn't much bigger than the minnowbait. That's when I decided to do a drift, dragging a live minnow under a float along a break. Nary a bit that way. Decided to go over to a protected shoreline, out of the wind, and see if anything was hanging around that wanted a minnow. Again, nary a bite. Decided that it was getting late enough, and noticed the wind was starting to lay down, so I cut off the lipless crankbait and tied on a frog-colored Jitterbug, and started casting. I caught two more on that lure, missed a third when it went airborn trying to inhale the bait, and caught one more bass on the trolling rod. Not bad for an evening paddle.
I did learn one thing. Actually, I've read this many times before, but tonight, it sank into my head. I've heard that when you're fishing topwater, once the lure lands, let it sit a few seconds before starting your retrieve. I started doing this, and about the second or third cast that I did this is when the one fish breached trying to get the lure, BEFORE I started the retrieve.
Allen what I'm thinking of trying is the sub surface 'walk the dog' :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWIt-XIVz_w .As far as speed I guess it can vary with the wide array of conditions we can face .
I have not had a chance to try that one, yet. If it's anything like a X-Rap or Clackin' Minnow, they are best worked S-L-O-W-L-Y!!! I've been trolling those two lures in my kayak, and hits always come when I'm just barely moving, or have actually come to a stop, and just as I start moving again, they hit.
Got a great price on a Rapala sub walk .4 bucks new ! Anyone use these ? I want to try this lure and technique soon.
Ok, switched my ML and M rods around, got the ML set up as my trolling rig. Cut the swivel off the M rod, tied on about 4 1/2' of 8 lbs test flouro with an Albright Knot. Tied a Jumping Minnow in Bone to the terminal end. Got fresh batteries for the sonar; planning on doing some graphing as well. If I see fish as a depth I can work, I'll try to work them over.
Glad you're here Allen !
Ok, I've started fishing for those green perch lately, so I might as well join this group :)
