Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Have not been on Big Bluegill in way to long... Bluegill are my favorite species to chase, primarily on the fly rod, and through the ice are my two favorite methods.

The 2011/2012 Ice fishing season was horrible, only fished 4 times, and all 4 times there was open water within 200 yards. The 2012 open water season was filled with chasing various species other than bluegill because my wife and 3 daughters became addicted to fishing below Gavin's point dam, and my wife in particular really began enjoying bowfishing, bighead carp are our favorite target, and bluegill waters and bighead waters don't often mix...

The 2012/2013 ice season was decent, my oldest daughter Kenz had been begging me to take her out ice fishing, and I finally felt comfortable allowing her on the ice.  In fact, I was able to put in some 1 on 1 time on the ice in with all three of my daughters, and they had a blast.

My ice season ended with an invite from a friend to join him, his dad, and another friend of ours on an expedition to a nice little farm pond in Western IA.

I'll let the pics do the rest of the talking...

My youngest Paige, didn't understand that this was a really nice fish for her fist time ice fishing, and just wasn't as excited as I was about it.

My oldest, Kenz

9 year old Alyssa

My wife, on the left, swore I would never get her on the ice... With some loaner gear from Recycled Fish, I finally got her out...

The final outing for some friends and I...

Good fishing is seldom easy, and this trip required some work!

But it was worth it once we got a pattern going

2013 is the year I put some effort into getting my daughters on some Nebraska Master Angler sized (10") bull bluegill!
