Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Can someone please shed some light on something that happened to me?

I feed my pond fish nearly every evening. On June 26 through the 28th the fish completely quite eating. My first thought was the pond turned over and all were dead laying on the bottom. On the 29th it was like someone had turned the switch back on and things were back to normal. I checked the barometer and there wasn't a big change so what was it. A couple thousand fish just quite eating for three days.

Interesting. I've been feeding my fish every since I can remember and I'm here to tell you they don't miss meals matter a fact there around the feeder about 10 minutes before it goes off like they have an internal built in clock. I feed a 8am and 8pm and the dog and I go out about every evening set on the dock and wait for the feeder to go off then all heck breaks loose. Never a dull moment with the hybrid stripers they are the 1st to the feeder and the last to leave. Then the gills come through in packs pretty well in different size groupings and the catfish they are just there eating what ever they can find. I even see an occasional bass feeding off of the pellets. I haven't seen the perch for awhile I think the water is to warm and they are staying deep. I still have yet to see any redears I put in 30 in 2 years ago and 30 in last year. What you are observing is interesting to say the least I'll keep my ears tune in to see if anyone can answer your question. Tony and Bruce come to mind as to maybe having your answer.

Thanks for the input Dick. I'm still doing research on it trying to find the answer. I have my local weathermen and even the earth quake people in Memphis digging into it. So far everyone's like us, don't know.

How dose the hybrid stripers work in a pond? I find that very interesting but I don't know if they would live in my mud hole.

When I added the hybrid stripers I had 2nd thoughts myself but one of the better things I have done. Without a doubt a terrific fight on any tackle. Caught one on my 2wt what a blast. I only put in a dozen then they seem to of have diapered found out the kids decided to keep them. I put in a dozen more and they have been ruling the roost every since. I have a dozen in my 3/4 acre pond and that is plenty they gather up at the feeder 1st and the last to leave.

I understand the concern, but my take is that there will be times and days when the fish simply won't eat, or at least not in the usual fashion. I don't worry unless there has been some weather lately, or visibility in the pond drops below 12", and/or we're in a long, hot, still stretch. Sometimes there just isn't an definitive answer, and as you noted the fish picked back up and all is well.

Something obviously turned them off, but speculation is all we have. Any unusual fishing pressure, rain, weed treatment, temperature fluctuations, etc?

Thanks Tony, I guess your right sometimes things just happen. So far I can't find a reason.
