Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

As stated in a previously posted blog, I would love some advise on landing some of the Bluegill in an abandoned company pond. I have been fishing it since last year, catching primarily Bass, but I hooked several large Bluegill last year, one topping the scales at just over 2 pounds.I caught those with a Rapala Original Minnow. Any advise on a more consistent bait/lure would be appreciated. The pond is 8-10 acres in size..I'm guessing closer to 8..Fairly clear to very lightly stained water..the center depth of the pond is 45 feet..My problem is a sweet one to have I guess..

From the bank or boat?
All of my catches have been from the bank, a boat would be ideal, but, unless I buy a rubber raft..I'm limited I guess.

That's a great looking pond........I love to fish ponds that no one seems to pay any attention to. As for lures.......I am almost totally a fly fisherman. If you can fish a fly rod I can give you my "go-to" list. If you tie your own......I can do much better. Back when I used to fish UL spin gear, my favorite was  the 1" floating REBEL minnow. I also used a small beetle-spin a lot. (road-runner is a good one ) Simple weighted jigs will work well too. I also fished some very tiny spoons ,haven't seen any of those in several years, (not sure anyone makes them anymore). By far the little REBEL 1" minnow in silver or gold with a black back caught more Blue-Gill (and Bass) that any other UL spin lure I ever used........Good Luck and let me know if I can help....................Don in SC

Its like I may be using UL spinning gear for a while..I picked up a few Strike King Mini minnows as suggested by a few people..I bought Firetiger and White..I am very open to any other suggestion to make my experience a better one.

Small jigs with either live bait or gulp alive ,small as 1/32 or smaller ,gulp alive 1in leeches or 1in small minnows like watermelon pearl or emarld shiner works well .walk around the pond when the water warms and look for shallow areas that might be spawning beds  .

As said earlier use small jigs under a cork tipped with grass shrimp or wax worms. You can also use a small bell sinker with a jig tied about 6 to 12 inches above the weight and slowly work on the bottom. Good luck.
