Allen I have used hares ears and pheasant tail for gills and other pan fish for years with lots of success

Thanks Jim!

Leo, that fly is technically a Trout fly, but I intend to see if Bluegill will eat it, since they eat just about any kind of insect.

Purple nymphs. What's the range of target for which period?

Most of my ice is gone as well.  Time to get my kayak sea-worthy again.  Got a new Sonar to install.

Another trick for using flies during Open Water season is to tie them onto a spinning rod under a weighted bobber.  Just twitch is along, speed depending on water temp.  If you have a good breeze, just let the wing push the float, and wave action to jig it.

Thanks Allen, I may try it next year. We had pretty good ice this year in central Indiana, but it is over now. I guess it would work just as well in open water.

John, basically it's a drop-shot rig, with a heavier jig on the bottom, and a small fly tied onto the line several inches above the main jig.

Very nice ties. You mentioned a "Michigan Rig" for  ice fishing. Not sure what that is?

Comment by Allen Morgan on February 26, 2018 at 6:32pm

Thanks guys.  Slip, that's a brass bead.  Lead wire wraps on the hook shank, shoved up into the bead.  Yes, I'll use these on a fly rod, but I'm also intending on using these for ice fishing as part of a "Michigan Rig" next season.

I did a non-descript nymph pattern with pink krystal braid(?), some pink dubbing, and a black tungsten bead with lead wire underwraps.  That one was mainly intended for ice fishing on a Michigan Rig or by itself.  I have no tried to cast it with my UL setup.
