Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

My brother just bought a place on the Coosa River near Gadsden, Alabama and I plan on going down to fish with him this year. I need any advise or tactics for fishing there. Anything will be helpful thanks.

I live in Tuscaloosa, about 60-70 miles or so from Gadsden. Never fished the Coosa, but my home waters, Black Warrior and the Coosa have the best potted bass fishery in the world. (In fact the Black Warrior is better, but less well known because there are no major tournaments happening on it.)

If it's anything like the Black Warrior, often I leave the floats at home for bluegill and fish for them in deep water almost as if I were drifting for catfish, only much lighter gear.

Thanks for the reply Damon, He lives on the bend that is cut off by the highway 77 bridge near Southside, it has no public access and you can't get under the bridge from the rest of the river. This part of the river should have less pressure and should provide some nice fishing. I often use a drop shot rig to locate bluegill in unfamiliar waters. You can keep close to the bottom and cover lots of water at different depths.

Yeah, that's why I love drop shoting.

Dang... drop shotting is illegal in rivers and streams in Michigan.

Really? Wow, must that good then.

Cross over The Coosa on a regular basis, just outside of Cullman, was curious about what was beneath the surface, looks inviting.

From Millbrook, near Montgomery, all have Jordan, Michell, and Lay Lake near. Never have caught any big bream. Ive heard Mitchell has some large ones, but never experienced it.

Hi David, I'm in Deatsville on the Millbrook side.

I'm not familiar with the area so I'll look those places up. Thanks for the reply. What have you fished for in these waters?

I live in Anniston, Al and used to fish the Coosa regular. Now I fish the Tallapoosa and Little Tallapoosa. I have done good at Weiss lake but most of all i fish lakes and watersheds for shellcracker and bluegill. I have heard the Wills creek area was a good bet for bluegill and Shoal Creek for crappie and bluegill.

Thanks Vic I appreciate the info.
