A straight line reel /rod 3#test  is my best outfit for Gills .Unlike biased newscasts  there's  no spin and Gills seem to usually want that!

i need to get one of those reels... the ones ive seen are all right hand retrieve.

what bait is your go to bait for your search and destroy rig?

I catch using a red feather or marabou jig or a small Marmooska jig tipped with a spike or  waxworm  .Another go to rod is a 2# test light rod dead sticked from a bucket .Using 4# test and a heavier rod ,I have caught better more aggressive Gills though with a Perch eye on a rattlin flyer. You got spring bobbers on your rods .They are often a must have .

i have only been ice fishing maybe a couple of times since i hurt my back in 2006 and then probably only a few times since i was a teenager... so by far i am an amateur that usually struck out with the gills but did well with the crappies and perch... Because i fished way to deep and not in the weeds! vertical jigging with the slab jigs tipped gulp maggots offered some success last ice season on two occasions and did quite well vertical jigging in open water last summer. i hope it continues this season.

Good fishing and tight lines

My buddy always does well with one of those fluorescent painted jigs tipped with a waxworm. I forget who makes 'em. I saw them at Gander Mountain yesterday.

these two lures were painted with uv glow.... thats what it said on the pkg. if i search holes and get nibbles with these or see fishing moving but dont take on the sonar ill drop a live waxie or gulp maggot on a bare hook next to it.

the fish really seemed to like these two slab spoons even in open water... maybe the glow paint had something to do with it.
