Catch a bluegill every month of the year in the Mason Dixon region...open water.Have done this before on milder winter years but you never know what the weather is going to bring!

What' s wrong with a Jan and Feb ice fish to complete the calendar Jim ;)!

John...I could do the Jan/Feb ice gill thing and make calendar list, but found out recently that I will need back surgery...scheduled for Jan 19 with a month in a neck brace and 6 weeks with no driving. Hoping to get back on the water by mid March or early April.

It's gonna' be a long winter.

Sorry to hear this Jim ,hang tough friend !Hopefully you'll desire to be in full writing mode and have some great thoughts to share about fishing here .That'll make the time pass sweetly for you I hope ! Merry Christmas Jim!

Find another serious Bluegill fisherman in the NC region that will want to go to small remote lakes around Western NC/Piedmont area.

You should have no problem finding one here ! BTW ,love that Piedmont Fingerpicking Guitar style!

Number 11 is the one that is the most dangerous, you will like it , you will say I'll try that again , and before you know it you will be hooked on catching  smallmouth on a fly rod , you will get a new set of friends, you will start jonesing for the next smallmouth,  missing work , spending  time away from your wife and before you know it your addicted. this is just a warning .  LOFR

oooh sounds good!

Right now im  focused on the master angler program

for Michigan obtaining these patches and citations....

  1. 10" plus Bluegill
  2. 14" plus Crappie
  3. 11.5" plus Rock Bass

id like to get replicas on all of them when it happens.

Nice Ken , have fun pursuing and I'm sure other goals will take the place when you've achieved these .

looks like you have a fun schedule there to John!. especially 10 and 11.

what wt fly rod would you use on that smallmouth pursuit?

What I have is a 5/6 weight Ken .Your question poses a mild  conundrum for me ,because my lightest fly rod doesn't have a weight printed on it .It was handmade from a Fenwick blank and given to me.I have a 5 or 6 weight line on it I think .With your question I am now wondering how a lighter weight line would work .I've caught Gills and small Bass on it and casting it ,as far as my experience takes me , seems to be ok . For smallies that run small ,up to 15 " say I'd be inclined to try making my unrated rod do what I want .For bigger smallies  ,I wonder how the other two fly rods with 5 and I think 6 weight lines would do .I have much to learn about fly-fishing .What do you use in terms of rod/Line weights, etc. ? Anyone else that can make some good suggestions?
