Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Summer patterns and warm surface temps have pushed fish deep...."Go large or go home"....the old addage goes...1/2 oz Swedish Pimple rigged with a 2 1/2" Fin-S minnow....this 4 1/2" package pushes the envelope for panfish in depths of up to 40 ft.

Hey Bill, You're absolutely right about the bigger size & depths! I recently talked with Microspoon (www.microspoons.com) and convinced them to produce a bigger (1 1/2"),heavier,deeper spoon specificlly for deep bluegills ! They are not in production yet,but the new experimental models I'm playing with feature one long shank soldered hook out back and take a plastic minnow body, plastic worm,or live bait in perfect swimming position. They have an amazing downward flutter, always land in hook-up position, and initial tests have 'gills all over them!
John, do you happen to have a pic of the prototype?....any idea on the actual spoon weights?

Been using the smaller Kastmaster with a single Red Daichi hook and seem to be doing fairly well on Lake Zurich. I like to tip with a small piece of crawler. I believe this set-up attracts the bigger Gills. Definitly the perch love it. Can't keep them off! The Bigger Gills have moved out to the deeps. 12' to 16' Camera is in for repair, for the second time! I will send pics later. Heres some Pics of some Spring Bulls.
I do agree that the bigger bluegills should like the bigger lures, although some of my bigger gills have come on 1 inch white twister tail grubs. next time im out I will need to take my float tube out and try some small kastmasters for those gills!
Bill, I don't have a pic of the prototype bigger Microspoon yet, but will try to get one taken & posted. It's shaped like their other models but has a cool looking scallop cut around the perimeter and are back weighted to give their unique action & quicker sinking. Not sure of the actual weight, but with the single, soldered hook seems more like a jig than a spoon with the way a plastic bait is slid on. The little home based company also has the PERFECT little action tail worm(paddle tailed like Brewer crappie grubs) for bluegill as a trailer. Being that the spoons are each individually crafted(not a big mass production set-up), they'll probably have them up & ready in a very short time!
