Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

haaha...it's like a support group, only more exciting!!. I've been looking at some of these posts here for a while and figured I would join and introduce myself. I love catching bluegills, love taking my kids fishing for bluegill, and just this year, started fly fishing for the buggers.

So far my best gill is a 10 and 1/4 inch red eared sunfish that I caught earlier this month using a crappie candy fly on a size 8 hook in about 8 inches of water right next to the banks. Was an exceptional fish and I would love to head to minnesota or wisconsin to hunt some bigger ones soon.

Welcome, Jon!!

It's great to have you here. You're our kinda people.
I feel the same way Jon. I joined last night as well. I am an addict too, and this is only going to make the winter months a little easier, along with learning some new stuff and making some new Bluegill Buddies...Don't forget to add Michigan to your list for some big ones.

Tight lines and talk to you soon..
Well..since I am medically retired, I may have to head to Michigan too...I've been all over Detroit area because I hauled cars for a while...beautiful state.

I do need to get out of Nebraska to find some of the "Alien 'gills" as some of you call them. That, or I need to just build a big pond and make 'em big that way
Hello Jon, I too lurked here and then took the step in joining to feed my addiction to Bluegill fishing. We have some big ones around here in Northwest IN but I would also like to make it WI, MN or MI to fish. We used to fish Land O Lakes WI back in the 70's and 80's but I haven't been up there since. I have friends with a cabin at Turtle Lake MN but haven't been up there yet.

My five year old rekindled my interest after I hadn't fished in years. He came to me this spring out of the blue and asked to go fishing." I asked what he knows about fishing. He said "Well, you go out and catch fish". Priceless
My son did something like that this year. We went out to a bluegill pond and he wanted to try my fly rod. After showing him how to do it, he kinda went through the motions...watched his rod tip, and where his hands were at (the whole "10 and 2") speech...and then looked at me and said, "Like this?"

Sure enough, the little butt tosses a small wolly bugger 30 feet on his first cast....little goober.

As far as where I would like to head yet this year, my goal is to get to Lake of the Woods...My grandpa used to guide there before he passed away, and he was always wanting to take my brothers and me up there to fish. I just want to see it if anything else, but if I could fish it....amazingness
